Expert Picks for Zurich Classic of New Orleans
Allenby isn't working as much as we might like this season, but his stops have been hard to ignore. He's been around a long time, but the Zurich has never been a regular stop. We worry his lack of history at the TPC Louisiana will be a problem, but we know his skills will not.
Jason Dufner [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #36
Dufner has made more appearances on our weekly rankings than any of us could have predicted, but he continues to play well and to push some of the best in the game to bring their best to keep him at bay. Add that to his history on this track and you'll be sold as well.
Camilo Villegas [Yahoo Class C] - World Ranking: #140
Villegas proved a major disappointment again last week and thus we push him down the list for the Zurich Classic. We're tempted to push him down further but his talents, while on hiatus over most of this 2011 season, could come back at any given moment.
Justin Leonard [Yahoo Class C] - World Ranking: #160
Leonard is well past his prime and opportunities to witness flashes of his youthful brilliance have been few and far between. With that understood we note the number of names tabbed with some form of major red flag. Leonard is among them in terms of potential and risk.
Austin is not a name we put forth often, but at particular events he can be a force of reckoning. He has played this game for a long time and this set of links in the swamp have always proven friendly for Austin, marking his name as one of the sleepers we come touting this week.
Sean O'Hair [Yahoo Class C] - World Ranking: #156
O'Hair's return trip to the top ranks of professional golf since suffering a horrific torn pec muscle has been as arduous and challenging as any we've seen related to injury over recent seasons. However, this course seems a fine fit for his preferred method of attack.
Vijay Singh [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #155
Vijay has cooled a bit since we bought back in on his fantasy value, but we wonder if the links of the TPC Louisiana might conjure positive vibes and get him back on the return track to greatness. He's been promising this season and we feel he can be again this week.
Ben Crane [Yahoo Class C] - World Ranking: #144
There are times when Crane sits near the top of our short list for the week, but this particular tourney seems to be one best avoided by fans of the slow-playing duffer. His history at this track isn't one of inspiration, and as such we are warning to temper expectations.
Charlie Wi [Yahoo Class C] - World Ranking: #110
Wi is one of several capable vets we often turn to with roster spots when the selection process is challenged. We are a bit down on his services this week due to a checkered past at the TPC Louisiana, but there have been flashes that conjure optimism as well.
Based on the leaderboards of recent seasons, we are tempted to move Sutherland higher on the weekly list but he has struggled to meet our expectations in other opportunities this season. He's a tough call, but one we like for this event.
Webb Simpson [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #42
His history on the Tour is short as a whole and as such he fails to bring a Louisiana resume that might justify a place in our top 30 for the week. However, he showed well on these links last season and we've seen just enough promise this season to carry hope.
Trahan is another member of the volatile mix we throw into the weekly ranks for the Zurich Classic, but he may be one of the more talented members of the bunch. He has struggled to maintain during previous visits to the bayou, but he's one of the most talented golfers we have yet to mention.
