Dustin Johnson [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #2
Johnson took a month off following his T6 performance at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. He showed no rust in last week’s AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am by earning a share of second, nearly catching winner Jimmy Walker with a Sunday-best round of 66. Over the years D.J. has been erratic at Riviera. Since 2009 he’s recorded three top-10s -- with a pair of top-fives -- in five starts, but missed the cut in the other two appearances.
Jimmy Walker [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #46
Walker has already won three times this season, including one fall series tournament. So far in 2014 he struggled in the Tournament of Champions before winning the next week in the Sony Open. Walker would then miss the cut at Torrey Pines, but won last week at Pebble Beach -- despite nearly blowing a big lead in the final round. This looks like a week where Walker can put together two consecutive strong efforts. He placed T4 at Riviera in 2011 and again in 2012. Last year he finished T16.
Hunter Mahan [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #170
Mahan quickly shook off a T47 showing Torrey Pines with a T4 at TPC Scottsdale and a solo sixth last week at Pebble Beach. He’ll suit up for a fourth consecutive week to play a tournament where he’s shown significant improvement. After missing the cut in 2010, Mahan has finished T55, T24 and T8 over the last three years.
Webb Simpson [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #67
Simpson has only played Riviera twice since 2010. He overcame a mediocre showing that same year by matching a Sunday-best round of 65 to climb more than 25 spots and finish T15. Simpson was more consistent in his return to the site last year and placed T6. Including a pair of fall events, Simpson has only fallen outside of the top 10 once in five starts this season.
Justin Rose [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #11
Rose is playing in a OWGR-eligible tournament for the first time anywhere this week at Riviera. In his final six worldwide appearances of 2013 he never finished outside of the top 10. Rose did not play Riviera last year, but owns a T9 from 2011 and a T13 from 2012.
Matt Kuchar [Yahoo Class C] - World Ranking: #15
Despite being one of the most steady players on Tour, Kuchar hasn’t been able to put together a complete tournament at Riviera yet. He hasn’t missed a cut in his eight trips there, but is without a top-15 since 2008. Kuchar has been in a great position after the second round of play each of the last two years, but has stumbled over the weekend. Kuchar is playing for the first time since leaving Hawaii with a pair of top-10s, giving him six straight dating back to last year.
Jordan Spieth [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #3
Spieth is playing Riviera for the first time after missing the cut in 2012. He is coming off a T4 at Pebble Beach, Spieth’s best result since placing as the runner-up in the Tournament of Champions.
Graham Delaet [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #144
DeLaet has earned a share of second each of his last two starts: Torrey Pines and TPC Scottsdale. He’s played Riviera the last two years, placing T21 and T44. DeLaet is playing well enough right now to start regardless of his track record, but the 68 he shot in the second round of each tournament shows he’s capable for improving upon last year’s result.
Bill Haas [Yahoo Class C] - World Ranking: #34
Haas missed two straight cuts at Riviera in 2009 and 2010, but has turned it all around over the last three years. He opened with the lead in 2011 and placed T12. The next season he would leave with the lead after winning a three-man playoff. Haas played well again last year with a T3. Haas will be looking to rebound after two straight tournaments where he has placed outside of the top 30.
Hideki Matsuyama [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #17
Matsuyama, who turns 22 later this month, is playing Riviera for the first time. After some impressive results in last year’s majors, Matsuyama continues to play well as a Tour member with a T16 at Torrey Pines and a T4 at TPC Scottsdale.
Keegan Bradley [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #119
Bradley began the season with four straight results inside the top 20 until missing the cut at TPC Scottsdale. He lost in a three-man playoff at Riviera in 2012 and placed T16 last year.
Ryan Moore [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #57
Moore finished a career-best T4 at Riviera in 2011. He had a chance at a top-10 heading into the final round each of the last two years, but blew those opportunities by shooting a 3-over 74 both times. So far in 2014 Moore has placed solo 10th in the Tournament of Champions and T6 at TPC Scottsdale.
