Expert Picks for the Memorial Tournament
Ernie Els [Yahoo Class C]
Els is always a commodity of choice, but at this event he happens to be a former champion with an impressive ability to compete with consistency. He is a regular on the top 20 listed on the final leaderboard at this event and, while we might be reaching for better options as starters, he could be considered one of the best values available.
Kenny Perry [Yahoo Class C]
We warn this is a dangerous pick with the state of Perry's career today, but if you love history then you love Perry as a member of the fantasy roster this week. The guy has multiple wins on this track (none are so far back in the rearview that you can't remember) and in more recent seasons, he has consistently finished among the final top twenty.
Ryan Palmer [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #62
Palmer has been so consistent over recent weeks, it would be negligent to keep him out of the top twenty at any non-major event right now. He's been one of the best on the Tour and the state of his game today suggests he can swing at Muirfield with the big boys.
Charl Schwartzel [Yahoo Class C] - World Ranking: #25
Schwartzel brings his green jacket to Muirfield with hopes of keeping his career momentum moving forward, and as such we have to give him respect as one of the most talented golfers in this or any field. We don't see a ton on his Memorial resume that screams for attention, but his work over the last two years most certainly does.
Carl Pettersson [Yahoo Class C]
Pettersson has become a regular for us at tourneys where the field is lacking in star power, but this week we love his value on a course he has ruled regardless of the field. Pettersson has been surprisingly persistent in chase of a win at this event and this season he may be at the top of his game.
Fred Couples [Yahoo Class C]
We've listed Couples in several editions of the rankings this season and, despite his push for success on the Champions Tour, he has served us well as he continues to find reward on the Tour. This is one event he always enjoys and, as a former champion, he has history to draw us back again.
Edoardo Molinari [Yahoo Class B]
We get one of two Molinari brothers this week and we've decided they both deserve consideration no matter what side of the globe they are hitting. They are young, talented, and fearless. It's a major gamble with a fantasy roster due to the lack of history but clearly, if you target talent, Edoardo should be on your radar.
Ryan Moore [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #31
Last season we watched Moore trolling the grounds early at Memorial with thoughts he might challenge for a win, and while he fell late, he finished among the top names in the game. If you are ever going to start Moore, it should either be on courses in Arizona or at Muirfield.
Robert Allenby [Yahoo Class C]
The tall Aussie has been on the mark on several occasions this season, but also on several occasions at Memorial. His history is a bit up and down on these links and thus he's down in our rankings, suggesting he's best rated as a backup option. If we're going to gamble we have too many options before Allenby makes the grade.
Brendon de Jonge [Yahoo Class A]
You've gotten used to seeing de Jonge on our rankings, but this week he falls back into the final ten due to the power of the field. Regardless, his short history on this track is impressive and he may be the top sleeper of the week.
Stewart Cink [Yahoo Class C]
Cink has left us wanting more so often over recent seasons that we are taking a normal target we ponder for starts and we are shoving him back. Either he ranks as the best value in golf for the week or the overrated vet you might consider. We think he can play, but we are tempering expectations.
Bo Van Pelt [Yahoo Class C]
Van Pelt was on the mark at this point last season, moving on to show well at the Memorial. This season is shaping into a similar look and we wonder if Van Pelt can swing with the big boys. We will see, but he's on our radar.
