Golf Rankings for Valero Texas Open
Matt Kuchar [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #20
While Kuchar’s track record in the Texas Open is rather poor, he has not competed since the event was moved to TPC San Antonio starting in 2010. Prior to last week’s disappointing T44 at Harbour Town, Kuchar had compiled a streak of three straight top-10s, highlighted by a T3 at the Masters. He currently ranks eighth in scoring average and 13th in scoring average. Kuchar is easily the top player in this field and is the favorite by a pretty wide margin.
Fredrik Jacobson [Yahoo Class C]
After finishing T5 in this event in 2009, Jacobson continued to roll at TPC San Antonio with a solo second in 2010 and another T5 last year. The Swede has not missed a cut this season and owns three top-20s in six starts. While his statistics this season are rather pedestrian, Jacobson is a very solid player with an excellent resume on this course.
Kevin Stadler [Yahoo Class C]
Over his last seven starts, Stadler owns six top-25s with three top-10s and a season-high T4 last week at Harbour Town. He finished T36 at TPC San Antonio last year and missed the cut in 2010. Currently 16th in scoring average, Stadler is riding a big wave of momentum and very capable of challenging for a win in his very limited field.
Johnson Wagner [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #180
Although Wagner has missed two of his last five cuts, he’s got three top-fives (including a win) at the Sony Open, and five top-15s in 11 starts. After missing the cut in his first start at TPC San Antonio, Wagner earned a T15 last year. Wagner ranks 21st in greens in regulation percentage, 23rd in scoring average and 28th in All-Around Ranking.
Kevin Na [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #47
In his first career start at TPC San Antonio, Na missed the cut last year. However, he’s playing very well this season with three top-fives and five finishes of 12th or better over his last seven stroke play events. Surprisingly, Na doesn’t rank very high in most statistics, but the results cannot be overlooked.
Charley Hoffman [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #64
Following a T13 in his debut at TPC San Antonio in 2010, Hoffman returned to the site last year to grab a share of second. The timing couldn’t be better as Hoffman is coming off his best finish of the season, a T8 last week at Harbour Town. Hoffman ranks 20th in driving distance, but accuracy is the thing this course demands.
J.B. Holmes [Yahoo Class C] - World Ranking: #30
After putting together some impressive results during the 2011 season, Holmes would require brain surgery after expiring vertigo symptoms due to an issue in his cerebellum. Holmes returned to action in late January missing two of his first three cuts, but has made five straight while scoring a pair of top-10s. Holmes has competed in both TPC San Antonio events finishing T13 and T11, respectively, over the last two years.
Bud Cauley [Yahoo Class C]
Prior to finishing T37 last week at Harbour Town, Cauley had finished T16th or better in three straight starts with a top-five and two top-10s. The rookie is a first timer at TPC San Antonio, but his inexperience has not been an issue for much of the season. Cauley ranks 23rd in total driving, 24th in scoring average and 25th in All-Around Ranking.
Harris English [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #75
English is another impressive rookie to consider this week. In 10 starts this season, he’s recorded five top-20s and finished T8 last week at Harbour Town. English is currently eighth in driving distance, 13th in birdie average, 14th in greens in regulation percentage and 18th in All-Around Ranking.
Boo Weekley [Yahoo Class B]
Over his last five starts Weekley has three top-15s, including a T6 last week at Harbour Town. Weekley has not competed at TPC San Antonio, but the veteran is playing well at the moment. He ranks an impressive second in total driving and is 30th in greens in regulation percentage.
Ryan Moore [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #29
Following a T4 at Bay Hill, Moore got off to an impressive start in the first two rounds of play at Redstone but was bounced from the event following an ugly round of 85. Moore is 17th in driving accuracy percentage, 31st in total driving and 36th in All-Around Ranking.
John Rollins [Yahoo Class C]
While Rollins has missed both cuts at TPC San Antonio, he’s a boom-or-bust player that has some dark horse potential. After starting the season with three top-10s in his first four starts, Rollins would miss four of his next five cuts before rebounding with a T20 last week. Rollins ranks third in total driving, 19th in birdie average and 29th in All-Around Ranking.
