4m agoThe Eagles selected Mitchell in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 22nd overall.
Mitchell (6-feet, 195 pounds) was the best player in a dominant Toledo secondary, a group that gave up only 29 passing touchdowns over their last 28 games. Mitchell has a fairly downhill game for a corner, boasting 4.33 speed and a willingness to dive headfirst into whatever is in his way, and with Philadelphia's pass rush that could make Mitchell a ballhawking threat. Mitchell intercepted five passes in 2022, returning two for touchdowns. Darius Slay is 33 and James Bradberry will soon be 31, so Mitchell might need to step up as the team's top corner soon depending on when Slay or Bradberry lose too many steps.

14m agoThe Dolphins selected Robinson in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 21st overall.
Christian Wilkins' departure may have made defensive tackle an obvious need for the Dolphins, but Bradley Chubb (knee) and Jaelan Phillips (Achilles) both suffering season-ending injuries late in the year necessitated some edge help if the right player was available. The Dolphins landed on Robinson, a disruptive pass-rusher out of Penn State who had 9.5 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss in two seasons at Happy Valley. Miami will have to tailor its scheme to get Robinson in the right alignment as he is just a touch under 6-foot-3 and 254 pounds. He has a motor and explosive athleticism (4.48 40-yard dash) but Robinson will need to develop his pass-rush moves as merely winning on athleticism will be difficult at his size.

Troy Fautanu PIT OTSteelers' Troy Fautanu: Taken 20th overall by Pittsburgh
20m agoThe Steelers selected Fautanu in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 20th overall.
Fautanu was a dominant left tackle at Washington but he slipped in the draft order due to measuring in slightly under 6-foot-4 at the combine (6-foot-3 and 3/4). Fautanu will still be listed at 6-foot-4 and more importantly boasts above-average arm length (34 and 1/2 inches). Fautanu may very well be Pittsburgh's eventual left tackle of the future depending on where the career of incumbent left tackle Dan Moore goes from here, but in the meantime Fautanu should provide Pittsburgh with a major upgrade at guard.

Jared Verse LAR DERams' Jared Verse: Heads to Los Angeles
31m agoThe Rams selected Verse in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 19th overall.
Defense was a huge need for the Rams coming into the draft and with the way the board fell, they managed to get one of the top edges in the class without trading up. Verse took a unique route to becoming a first-rounder, beginning his career at Albany and playing his way onto Florida State's radar in 2022. He collected 18 sacks and 29 tackles for loss during his time with the Seminoles. Verse played in a 4-3 defense but is scheme versatile and his pass-rushing ability can work in Los Angeles. He's not the Aaron Donald replacement, but taking Verse is a step toward backfilling his pass-rush impact.

37m agoThe Bengals selected Mims in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 18th overall.
Mims (6-foot-8, 340 pounds) is almost entirely raw material after starting just eight games in his Georgia career, but it's the kind of raw materials that can yield uniquely high upside. Although he's enormous like few linemen in NFL history, Mims moves like someone smaller than himself, boasting an 111-inch broad jump that grades close to elite by offensive tackle standards. While it's true that Mims might need some development time the Bengals are prepared to grant him that for 2024 at least, as one-year free agent pickup Trent Brown should probably be considered the favorite to start at right tackle for the Bengals in Week 1.

Dallas Turner MIN LBVikings' Dallas Turner: Trade-up target for Minnesota
45m agoThe Vikings selected Turner in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 17th overall.
Minnesota traded up with the Jaguars to get one of the top edge rushers in the class in Turner. An All-American at Alabama, Turner racked up an SEC-leading 11.0 sacks as a true junior in 2023, but he's far from a late bloomer. Turner burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2021 and racked up 8.5 sacks alongside Will Anderson to create a fierce pass-rushing tandem. Athletically, Turner is rather light for an NFL edge at 246 pounds but the athletic tools (4.46 40, 40.5-inch vertical, 34.38-inch arms) are loud. With Danielle Hunter now in Houston, Turner will be relied upon right away to create havoc in the Vikings' front seven.

Cody Morris NYY RPYankees' Cody Morris: Sent back to minors
16m agoMorris was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday.
Morris was called up to the majors Saturday but did not make an appearance. He'll head back to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he's allowed six earned runs and maintained a 9:6 K:BB across eight innings early on in the campaign.

Mike Clevinger CHW SPWhite Sox's Mike Clevinger: Throws 60 pitches
36m agoClevinger allowed one earned run on four hits and two walks while striking out three across 3.1 innings Thursday with Triple-A Charlotte, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Clevinger is ramping up his workload after signing with the White Sox a few days after the season began. He threw 60 pitches in his appearance Thursday and will increase his workload to 75 pitches in his next outing, which will also come with Charlotte. Assuming all goes well, Clevinger's third appearance of the campaign will come in the majors -- setting him up to debut around May 5.

44m agoRyan was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Ryan has had success in the majors this season, maintaining a 3.00 ERA with a 13:5 K:BB across 12 innings. He threw 1.2 scoreless frames Thursday against the Brewers, so this move is likely just a roster shuffle to get a fresh arm in the Pirates' bullpen in the short term. No corresponding move was announced.

1h agoRefsnyder went 2-for-5 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored in Thursday's 6-4 loss to the Guardians.
Refsnyder is raking during a five-game hit streak, going 9-for-20 with extra-base hits in all five contests. The plan was for him to play against left-handers, but injuries to key players have led to four of his five starts against right-handers, against whom he's 7-for-16 with five extra-base hits.

Merrill was scratched Thursday but the issue was deemed precautionary. He spoke to reporters following the Padres' loss and said he feels fine and is adjusting to the rigors of the MLB schedule. While Merrill is expected to return Friday, it will be worth confirming he is in the lineup as San Diego opens a series against the Phillies.

Devers produced a second consecutive three-hit effort after missing five games with a knee injury. He's 6-for-9 with a double, home run, two RBI and two runs scored in his two games back. The downtime appears to have given the balky shoulder he was dealing with during Boston's homestand last week time to heal.

As has been the trend throughout the regular season and the playoffs, Davis appears in the injury report but then is listed as available closer to tipoff. Davis has averaged 32.0 points, 12.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 blocks per game in the first two games of the series against the Nuggets.

2h agoRobinson won't return to Thursday's Game 3 versus the 76ers due to a sprained left ankle, Ian Begley of SportsNet New York reports. He finished with two points and seven rebounds in 12 minutes.
Robinson carried a questionable tag into Thursday, and he seemed uncomfortable and a step slow for most of the evening before he left the game for good. Isaiah Hartenstein will likely be asked to soak up more minutes in the meantime. Robinson should be considered questionable for Game 4 Sunday.

Anderson was cleared to play in Game 2 with this same right hip issue, but he never saw the floor. Instead, Nickeil Alexander-Walker played 31 minutes off the bench and Minnesota tightened up their rotation.

Embiid carried a questionable tag prior to this update, but he seemed more than fine in the opening pair of games in this series. He made it through his usual warmup and there's no word of any restrictions ahead of tipoff, so he seems like a safe bet to handle his regular workload after logging 35-plus minutes in the first two contests of the series.

The questionable tag on Gafford is not surprising, as the big man missed Thursday's practice due to his lower back problem. If he can't go Friday, then Dereck Lively and Maxi Kleber are candidates to receive increased playing time.

19m agoVarlamov stopped eight shots after entering in relief of Ilya Sorokin in the second period of Thursday's 3-2 loss to the Hurricanes.
After Varlamov dropped the first two games of the series, the Islanders turned to Ilya Sorokin on Thursday in an attempt to change the momentum. However, Sorokin allowed three goals on Carolina's first 14 shots before the Isles turned back to Varlamov midway through the second period. The 35-year-old Varlamov managed to hold the Canes scoreless over the game's final 30:33 minutes, though New York ultimately couldn't find a tying goal, leaving Sorokin with the loss. Varlamov figures to be back between the pipes for Saturday's do-or-die Game 4. Despite the Islanders' struggles thus far in the series, Varlamov's posted a solid .915 save percentage in three postseason appearances.

Ilya Sorokin NYI GIslanders' Ilya Sorokin: Pulled in the second
32m agoSorokin allowed three goals on 14 shots before he was replaced by Semyon Varlamov in the second period of Thursday's 3-2 loss to Carolina.
Looking to climb out of a 2-0 hole in the series, the Islanders elected to switch things up and turn to Sorokin in net for Game 3. The 28-year-old netminder allowed two goals on the first six shots he faced in the first period and a third tally to Sebastian Aho 7:14 into the second before he was pulled in favor of Varlamov. Sorokin seemed to be the Islanders' unquestioned starter after signing an eight-year extension prior to the season. However, he was outplayed down the stretch by Varlamov, who took over the top goaltending job heading into the playoffs. Sorokin went 25-19-12 this year with a career-low .908 save percentage and 3.01 GAA.

3h agoFast (upper body) is unlikely to recover before the end of the playoffs, coach Rod Brind'Amour told Cory Lavalette of the North State Journal on Thursday.
Fast was injured during the Hurricanes' regular-season finale April 16. He had six goals and 19 points in 73 contests in 2023-24. Fast is in the first campaign of a two-year, $4.8 million contract, so even if he does miss the remainder of the postseason, he likely hasn't played in his final contest with Carolina. The 32-year-old serves in a bottom-six capacity when healthy.

Fleury hasn't been in the lineup since April 6 because of the injury. He has a goal and five points in 24 contests this season. Fleury might be deployed on the third pairing once he's recovered, but it's also possible Tampa Bay would make him a healthy scratch.
