Jake Browning CIN QB
Bengals' Jake Browning: Signs through 2025
1h agoBrowning signed a two-year contract with the Bengals on Tuesday.
Undrafted back in 2019, the QB spent two years on Minnesota's practice squad and then two seasons on Cincinnati's. Browning finally got his shot in 2023, winning the No. 2 QB job for the Bengals and eventually replacing an injured Joe Burrow (wrist) for the final seven and a half games of the season. Browning played surprisingly well down the stretch, with 15 total TDs (three rushing) and seven turnovers (all INTs) while leading all qualified passers in completion percentage (70.4) and ranking fifth in yards per attempt (8.0). The 28-year-old's status as an exclusive-rights free agent this offseason essentially locked him into staying with the Bengals, and the two-year deal now sets him up to be a restricted free agent after 2025. His solid performance in 2023 --combined with 2-3 more years of team contract control -- could make Browning a trade target for QB-needy teams, though there haven't been rumblings of interest this spring.

Rasul Douglas BUF CB
Bills' Rasul Douglas: Key acquisition in 2023
8h agoDouglas posted 61 tackles, 1.0 sacks, 14 passes defensed, five interceptions, a pick-six and three fumble recoveries over 16 regular-season games split between the Packers and Bills.
The Bills acquired Douglas from Green Bay in a Halloween trade, and the veteran played a key role in helping the Bills turn around their season and win a fourth straight AFC East title. With Buffalo losing several key pieces this offseason, Douglas will remain a clear-cut starter and locker room leader entering his eighth NFL season. He's had four-plus picks in each of the last three seasons.

Jacob Phillips CLE LB
Texans' Jacob Phillips: Houston bound
16h agoPhillips (pectoral) inked a one-year deal with the Texans on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Phillips spent last year on Cleveland's injured reserve due to a torn pectoral muscle. It was his second straight season-ending pectoral injury, as the same injury ended his 2022 campaign early. The 2020 third-round pick's addition to the Texans' offseason roster indicates his health is back to up to par. He will now compete for a role at linebacker in Houston.

Mitchell Wilcox NE TE
Patriots' Mitchell Wilcox: Inks new deal
19h agoWilcox signed a contract with the Patriots on Monday, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reports.
Wilcox now will call New England home after spending the first three campaigns of his career In Cincinnati. The 27-year-old appeared in all 17 regular-season games in 2023, mostly operating as the Bengals' No. 3 option at tight end and recording nine catches (on 12 targets) for 56 yards. If he can make the Patriots' roster this year, he'll likely be a depth option for them, too.

Cole Holcomb PIT LB
Steelers' Cole Holcomb: Future status still in question
19h agoHolcomb (knee) still doesn't have a timeline for when he may be able to return to the field, Adam Borst of SteelersNow.com reports.
Holcomb suffered a significant knee injury Week 9 against the Titans that required season-ending surgery to repair. Since then, there has been speculation that the damage done was enough to keep the North Carolina product on the sidelines permanently, bringing an early end to his career. However, according to GM Omar Khan, Holcolmb is "working extremely hard to get back. I don't really have much to add on a timeline." Khan further stated, "It was a major injury, but he is working hard and I'm optimistic about all the effort he's going to put into getting back on the field."

Brandon Aiyuk SF WR
49ers' Brandon Aiyuk: Discussing deal with team
20h agoGM John Lynch said Monday that the 49ers are having "good talks" with Aiyuk, who hasn't been at the team facility for the offseason program, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Aiyuk is unlikely to show up for voluntary workouts without a new contract in hand, but that doesn't necessarily mean he'll hold out from mandatory minicamp in June if the two sides haven't reached an agreement by then. The 26-year-old's agent denied reports of a trade request last weekend, and it sounds like there's still hope for a long-term contract heading into the fifth and final year of Aiyuk's rookie deal. He's scheduled to make $14.12 million under the fifth-year option, whereas a multi-year deal likely would entail a large signing bonus and an annual average value well north of $20 million. Making it work for the 2024 season isn't an issue, but the Niners may be hesitant to pay Aiyuk at market value long term when they already have six players scheduled for cap hits north of $20 million in 2025, including WR Deebo Samuel and TE George Kittle. Even then, it's a workable situation, as they've got a starting QB on a late-round-rookie contract and don't owe large sums of guaranteed money beyond the current year to anyone besides DE Nick Bosa.

Keynan Middleton STL RP
Cardinals' Keynan Middleton: Extends throwing distance
14m agoMiddleton (forearm) played catch from 110 feet Saturday and Sunday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
The Cardinals haven't followed up about how Middleton responded to his latest long-toss session, but assuming he didn't experience any complications with his strained right forearm, he could soon be cleared to start throwing off a mound again. Middleton hasn't pitched since suffering the injury in a March 7 Grapefruit League game, but once healthy, he's expected to be a key part of the late-inning bridge to closer Ryan Helsley.

Dylan Carlson STL CF
Cardinals' Dylan Carlson: Could begin rehab assignment soon
18m agoCardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Carlson (shoulder) took batting practice from both sides of the plate Monday and could start a minor-league rehab assignment within days, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
The Cardinals are expected to re-evaluate Carlson on Tuesday to see how he responded to his latest live BP session, but if his left shoulder isn't causing any issues, the 25-year-old could be cleared for game action. Carlson appears further along in his recovery from the shoulder injury than Tommy Edman does in his recovery from wrist surgery, so Carlson could end up settling in as St. Louis' primary center fielder if he beats Edman back from the 10-day injured list.
-
Matt Carpenter STL DH
Cardinals' Matt Carpenter: Gets injection for oblique
21m agoCardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Monday that Carpenter received a platelet-rich plasma injection for his strained right oblique, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
The Cardinals will have Carpenter rest for the next three days to allow the injection to take effect. If all goes well, Carpenter will resume hitting on the field later this week, and then face a high-velocity pitching machine before he starts getting at-bats in a game setting. Heading into the season, Carpenter didn't look as though he would be in store for much of a role before being placed on the 10-day injured list April 4, but he could have an opportunity to see reps at designated hitter if Nolan Gorman (.610 OPS, 38.1 percent strikeout rate in 84 plate appearances) and Alec Burleson (.549 OPS in 52 plate appearances) fail to show improvement in the weeks to come.
-
Drew Rom STL SP
Cardinals' Drew Rom: Timeline for return uncertain
29m agoCardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Friday that Rom (biceps) recently took part in plyometric exercises but didn't respond well to the activity, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
The update doesn't shed much light on where exactly Rom stands in his recovery from left biceps tendinitis, an injury he sustained during spring training. The fact that Rom has yet to resume throwing just under a month after landing on the 15-day injured list suggests a rehab assignment isn't imminent for the 24-year-old southpaw. Rom could be a candidate to move to the 60-day IL if he's unable to begin a throwing progression by the start of May.
-
Josiah Gray WAS SP
Nationals' Josiah Gray: Resumes playing catch
1h agoNationals manager Dave Martinez said Friday that Gray resumed playing catch from 60 feet last week, MLB.com reports.
Though the fact that Gray is no longer shut down from throwing is an encouraging sign after he landed on the 15-day injured list April 9 with a right elbow flexor strain, the 26-year-old still has several more checkpoints to hit in his rehab program before he'll be ready to rejoin the Washington rotation. He's without a clear timeline for a return from the IL, but Gray appears safe to rule out from being activated before the end of April.

Sam Huff TEX C
Rangers' Sam Huff: Sent back to minors
2h agoThe Rangers optioned Huff to Triple-A Round Rock on Monday.
Huff was up for a handful of days and did not receive a plate appearance. He'll go back to getting regular reps at Round Rock.

Jamal Murray DEN PG
Nuggets' Jamal Murray: Sinks game-winning shot Monday
1m agoMurray ended Monday's 101-99 victory over the Lakers in Game 2 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals with 20 points (9-24 FG, 0-5 3Pt, 2-2 FT), three rebounds, five assists and two blocks across 39 minutes.
Even though Nikola Jokic stole the show with a triple-double, it was Murray who ended up being the hero for the Nuggets, as his buzzer-beating fadeaway jumper gave Denver a massive win despite the team trailing by as much as 20 points at one point. Murray has scored at least 20 points in each of his last six appearances dating back to the regular season, and the star floor general should handle a prominent role in Game 3 on Thursday in Los Angeles.
-
Anthony Davis LAL C
Lakers' Anthony Davis: Leads Lakers in Game 2 defeat
4m agoDavis ended Monday's 101-99 loss to the Nuggets in Game 2 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals with 32 points (14-19 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 4-4 FT), 11 rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal over 39 minutes.
Davis has led the Lakers in scoring in each of the first two games of the series, but despite producing back-to-back 30-plus point efforts in the matchup against Nikola Jokic, the Lakers have fallen short of victory both times. Davis will likely land in the injury report ahead of Game 3, but given the situation the Lakers are in, and the workload he's handled in the first two games of the series, the star big man shouldn't have problems being active Thursday.
-
LeBron James LAL SF
Lakers' LeBron James: Sniffs triple-double in loss
5m agoJames ended with 26 points (9-19 FG, 3-6 3Pt, 5-7 FT), eight rebounds, 12 assists, two blocks and two steals over 38 minutes during Monday's 101-99 loss to the Nuggets in Game 2 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals.
James finished just two rebounds shy of a triple-double Monday, and even though the 39-year-old forward is competing at a high level, it seems the Lakers just keep falling short against Denver. James has recorded at least 25 points, six rebounds and eight assists in each of the first two games of the series, and he should continue to have a high usage rate in Game 3 on Thursday.
-
D'Angelo Russell LAL PG
Lakers' D'Angelo Russell: Shows improvement in Game 2
7m agoRussell logged 23 points (8-16 FG, 7-11 3Pt), three rebounds and six assists across 39 minutes during Monday's 101-99 loss to the Nuggets in Game 2 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals.
Russell delivered a much-improved effort compared to Game 1 of the series when he notched 13 points while shooting poorly (6-20 FG, 1-9 3Pt), but his efforts were not enough Monday, as the Lakers wasted a 20-point lead and lost the game on a buzzer-beater from Jamal Murray. Nonetheless, the uptick in efficiency in a positive thing for Russell, who should have a pivotal role on offense in Thursday's decisive Game 3.
-
Jalen Suggs ORL SG
Magic's Jalen Suggs: Expects to play in Game 3
2h agoSuggs said after Monday's 96-86 loss to the Cavaliers that he doesn't think his sprained left knee injury will keep him from playing Thursday in Game 3 of the series, Josh Robbins of The Athletic reports.
Suggs suffered the injury in the first quarter Monday, when he collapsed to the floor after making contact with Cleveland's Donovan Mitchell. Suggs grabbed his leg in visible pain after the play and didn't put any weight on his leg as he was assisted to the locker room, but he was able to return to the contest after halftime while sporting a compression sleeve on his leg. He ended up playing well down the stretch, finishing with nine points (2-5 FG, 0-3 3Pt, 5-7 FT), six rebounds, five assists and one steal in 29 minutes. Adrenaline might have played a part in Suggs feeling well enough to return, so the Magic will wait and see how his knee responds over the next two days before deciding whether he's fit to play in Game 3 with the Magic facing a 2-0 series deficit.
-
Kelly Oubre Jr. PHI SG
76ers' Kelly Oubre: Does little in loss
4h agoOubre logged four points (2-7 FG), two rebounds, three assists and three blocks across 26 minutes during Monday's 104-101 loss to the Knicks in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
Oubre's unproductive evening marked his second consecutive subpar performance in the quarterfinals. He joined a mediocre group of starters who scored only 22 points compared to the 69 points accrued by Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. Improved stat lines from Oubre will be necessary for the Sixers to even the series at home.
-
Casey Cizikas NYI C
Islanders' Casey Cizikas: Registers assist
23m agoCizikas logged an assist in Monday's 5-3 loss to Carolina.
Cizikas redirected a pass off the wall to Matt Barzel, who then found Bo Horvat for a one-timer in the slot late into the first period to put the Islanders up 2-0. The 33-year-old recorded 15:47 of ice time and had two hits and one blocked shot. He will likely be on the first line with Matthew Barzel and Bo Horvat heading into game three.
-
Morgan Geekie BOS C
Bruins' Morgan Geekie: Opens scoring in defeat
26m agoGeekie scored a power-play goal on his lone shot in Monday's 3-2 loss to the Maple Leafs.
Geekie opened the scoring midway through the first period, ripping a Brad Marchand feed into an open net to give Boston a 1-0 lead. The 25-year-old Geekie is coming off a solid debut campaign in Boston -- he posted 17 goals and 39 points, both career highs, across 76 games, though he was held to just one goal and five points over his final 13 contests.
-
Kyle Palmieri NYI C
Islanders' Kyle Palmieri: Opens scoring in Game 2
31m agoPalmieri scored a goal on a team-high four shots in Mondays' 5-3 loss to the Hurricanes.
Palmieri opened the scoring late in the first period Monday, poking a loose puck past Frederik Andersen to give the Islanders a 1-0 lead. Palmieri was excellent down the stretch, tallying seven goals and 11 points in nine games to close out the regular season. The 33-year-old winger finished the campaign with 30 goals, matching a career high, and 54 points over 82 games.
-
Mike Reilly NYI D
Islanders' Mike Reilly: Records helper
33m agoReilly recorded an assist in Monday's 5-3 loss to Carolina.
Reilly's assist came late into the first period centering a pass to Kyle Palmieri in the slot to put the Islanders up 1-0. The 30-year-old recorded 16:50 of ice time to go along with two blocked shots. He will likely be on the third defensive pairing with Robert Bortuzzo heading into game three.
-
Teuvo Teravainen CAR LW
Hurricanes' Teuvo Teravainen: Scores in Game 2
39m agoTeravainen notched a power-play goal in Monday's 5-3 win over the Islanders.
Teravainen got Carolina on the board midway through the second period, burying a Jake Guentzel feed on the man advantage to cut the Islanders' lead to 3-1 in the eventual comeback victory. Teravainen came into the playoffs with some scoring momentum, tallying four goals and five points in his final three regular-season games. The 29-year-old winger finished the campaign with 25 goals, a career high, and 53 points across 76 contests.
-
Stefan Noesen CAR RW
Hurricanes' Stefan Noesen: Racks up penalty minutes
39m agoNoesen recorded 17 penalty minutes in a 5-3 win in Game 2 against the Islanders on Monday.
Noesen spent five minutes in the box in the first period after dropping the gloves against Kyle MacLean before also snagging a 10-minute misconduct in the final minute of the game. The 31-year-old Noesen ended the regular season on a 20-game goal drought before finding the back of the net in Game 1. As such, fantasy players probably shouldn't be expecting consistent offensive production out of the Texas native.
