2h agoThe Commanders are declining the fifth-year option on Davis' (shoulder) rookie contract, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Washington took Davis with the 19th pick in the 2021 Draft, and while he's started 36 of 45 games through three seasons, his elite athleticism (4.47 40, 42-inch vertical) hasn't translated to elite performance. The 25-year-old likely will be a starter again in 2024 under new coach Dan Quinn, but it won't come as any surprise if this ends up being Davis' final year in Washington. He had season-ending shoulder surgery in December, potentially impacting his participation in spring practices.

18h agoElliott's agent will meet with the Cowboys in Dallas on Wednesday, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reports.
The two sides have been connected throughout the offseason, as Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reported last month that Elliott and the Cowboys had mutual interest in a reunion. The Cowboys lost Tony Pollard to the Titans in free agency and only added end-of-roster types Royce Freeman and Snoop Conner to a running back room that includes Rico Dowdle, Deuce Vaughn and Malik Davis. Elliott played in all 17 games for the Patriots last season, carrying 184 times for 642 yards and three touchdowns while adding a 51-313-2 receiving line on 65 targets.

19h agoHendrickson recently requested to be traded from Cincinnati, a league source tells Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Per Schefter, Hendrickson -- who is under contract for $15 million in 2024 and is on the books through 2025 -- is looking for more long-term security than the Bengals have been willing to offer to this point. The 29-year-old is coming of a 2023 campaign in which he recorded 43 tackles and made a major impact as a pass rusher by racking up a career-high 17.5 sacks over 17 games.

Micah Parsons DAL LBCowboys' Micah Parsons: Contract option picked up
20h agoThe Cowboys exercised the fifth-year team option on Parsons' rookie contract Wednesday, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Per Gehlken, the star edge rusher will earn $21.32 million in 2025, but that salary may only serve as a placeholder before Parsons and the Cowboys are able to work out what's expected to be a lavish long-term deal. The 24-year-old is coming off another productive effort with the Cowboys in 2023, as he racked up 64 tackles and a career-high 14 sacks in 17 regular-season outings.

James Hurst NO OGJames Hurst: Announces retirement
21h agoHurst announced his retirement from the NFL after 10 seasons on Wednesday, Katherine Teller of ESPN.com reports.
Hurst started 51 games between guard and tackle for the Saints since joining the team as a free agent after the 2020 season. Prior to his stint with the Saints, Hurst began his career with the Ravens in 2014 after going undrafted out of North Carolina. His retirement comes just one day prior to the start of the 2024 NFL Draft and leaves the Saints with a glaring need at left guard, though the team did reportedly have advanced warning of Hurst's decision.

Penei Sewell DET OTLions' Penei Sewell: Inks massive extension
23h agoSewell and the Lions agreed to terms Wednesday on a four-year, $112 million contract extension, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Sewell's deal, which reportedly includes $85 million guaranteed, makes him the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL. The 23-year-old right tackle has played at a high level since joining Detroit as the No. 7 overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, but he took a step forward in 2023 while earning first-team All-Pro honors. In addition to Sewell, the Lions extended top wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown to a four-year extension Wednesday, one day in advance of the 2024 NFL Draft.

2m agoWitt went 1-for-3 with a walk, one RBI, two stolen bases and one run scored in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Blue Jays.
Witt's RBI single in the fifth inning produced the decisive run in the contest. He's gone 7-for-20 (.350) with three RBI and three steals over his last five games. He continues to hit well out of the No. 2 spot in the order, slashing .317/.367/.574 with four home runs, seven steals, 11 RBI, 21 runs scored, eight doubles and three triples over 109 plate appearances. Witt's success has been a driving force behind the Royals' impressive 15-10 start to the campaign.

5m agoSchreiber (2-0) pitched a perfect inning and was credited with the win Wednesday over the Blue Jays.
Schreiber was deemed the most effective reliever after Alec Marsh (elbow) exited the contest in the fifth inning and Angel Zerpa struggled in a 1.2-inning assignment. Schreiber has maintained scoreless outings in all but one of his appearances so far, pitching to a 0.75 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 8:3 K:BB across 12 innings. He's added two wins and seven holds while serving in a setup role. Schreiber doesn't have a clear path to saves with James McArthur emerging as the Royals' closer, but he's very clearly in the late-inning mix.

12m agoSlater went 1-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base in Wednesday's 8-2 loss to the Mets.
Slater has struggled at the plate this year, but he remains in a short-side platoon role in right field. The steal was his first of the campaign, and he's batting just .115 with one RBI, three runs scored and no extra-base hits over 32 plate appearances. Slater will often play in right field when Mike Yastrzemski is on the bench, but the former's hitting hasn't been strong enough to make much of a fantasy impact.

Abreu is on the bench for the third time in four games, with Jon Singleton getting the nod at first base in his place. It's clear at this point that Abreu's standing atop the depth chart is on thin ice, as the 37-year-old has followed up a disappointing 2023 campaign with an even more disastrous start to the 2024 season, as he's slashing .065/.132/.081 with a career-worst 25 percent strikeout rate across 68 plate appearances. First base/outfield prospect Joey Loperfido has gotten off to a hot start to the season at Triple-A Sugar Land and could soon be summoned to the big leagues if the Astros aren't confident in Abreu's ability to stage a turnaround and/or if Singleton proves to be a poor replacement for Abreu.

14m agoCrawford is expected to be placed on the 10-day injured list after being diagnosed with a Grade 1 right oblique strain, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports.
Crawford was a late scratch from Wednesday's lineup due to the injury and subsequent testing revealed the strain. It's the least severe grade of strain, so it's possible his stint on the IL will not be a lengthy one. Dylan Moore is making a second straight start at shortstop Thursday and Leonardo Rivas will replace Crawford on the roster.

Suggs suffered a left knee sprain during Monday's Game 2 loss, but he practiced fully Wednesday and did so again Thursday morning. He's averaged 11.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 31.0 minutes per game over the first two matchups in the series.

The Thunder secured a statement win in Game 2 of the series, and Gilgeous-Alexander was dominant en route to his first 30-point effort since April 9, when he exploded for 40 points in a win over the Kings. Gilgeous-Alexander should lead the Thunder in Game 3 on Saturday, and he's having an excellent series so far, shooting 55.8 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from deep in the first two games against New Orleans.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren carried the Thunder to a blowout win in Game 2 of the series, but Dort made his presence felt Wednesday and was a menace from beyond the arc. Dort should remain a capable contributor as the series heads to New Orleans for Game 3 on Saturday.

Holmgren was expected to have a tough matchup while being guarded by Jonas Valanciunas, but the rookie has looked outstanding in his first two playoff contests, posting a double-double in Game 1 and delivering his best scoring output in more than a month in the second game of the series. Holmgren should continue to have a prominent role for the Thunder in Game 3 on Saturday.

4h agoValanciunas closed Wednesday's 124-92 loss to the Thunder in Game 2 of the Western Conference first round with 19 points (8-14 FG, 3-3 FT), seven rebounds and two assists in 23 minutes.
Valanciunas has been doing everything he can to slow Chet Holmgren down, and while that has proven to be a daunting task for the veteran, he's finding a rhythm on the offensive end of the court. Valanciunas has now scored at least 13 points in each of his last three postseason appearances, and he should continue to experience an uptick in his usage rate since Zion Williamson (hamstring) will still be sidelined for Game 3 on Saturday.

Jones posted his best performance of the current postseason run, but his efforts were not enough as the Pelicans suffered a 32-point loss and now face an 0-2 deficit in the first-round series. Jones has scored in double digits in just four of his 12 appearances this month, and this 18-point output tied his best scoring mark since posting a 19-point effort against Miami on Feb. 23, so he's not expected to carry the Pelicans on offense in Game 3 on Saturday.

Bobrovsky was excellent in Game 2, stopping 21 of 23 shots in a 3-2 win over Tampa Bay on Tuesday. The 35-year-old has played 72 career playoff games, recording an .905 save percentage and 31 wins total. He will have a tough matchup against Tampa Bay, who's 123-92-0 all-time at home in the playoffs.

30m agoLomberg (illness) will not play Thursday versus Tampa Bay, according to Colby Guy of Florida Hockey Now.
Lomberg accompanied the Panthers to Tampa Bay, but he will be replaced by Kyle Okposo on the fourth line. Lomberg, who missed Tuesday's tilt, is likely to return Saturday for Game 4. Lomberg had five goals, two assists, 80 PIM and 179 hits in 75 games this season.

Chytil only played in 10 games with the big club during the regular season, recording six assists and 22 shots on goal. The 24-year-old has played in 30 career playoff games, logging eight goals and five assists. He could provide a huge boost to the forward depth for New York if he returns in this series.

Parssinen played in 44 regular-season games for Nashville this year, recording eight goals and four assists to go along with 54 shots on goal. The 23-year-old was spotted at morning skate Thursday, so it looks like he could get into the lineup for Friday's Game 3 versus Vancouver. If he does play, expect Lomberg to slide into a bottom-six role.
