10m agoThe Commanders selected McCaffrey in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 100th overall.
McCaffrey originally arrived to Nebraska as a coveted quarterback recruit, but he couldn't stick at the position and ended up making the switch to receiver after transferring to Rice. McCaffrey is a bit thin at 6-foot-2, 198 pounds and has little catch radius to speak of, but his athleticism tested well at the combine (4.46-second 40-yard dash, 6.7-second three-cone drill) and his production at Rice was generally encouraging, especially since he just started playing wideout in 2022. It's possible that McCaffrey might need some more developmental time after switching from quarterback, but the bloodlines are obviously highly favorable and we already know McCaffrey has starter-caliber athleticism. Washington simply waits now to see how much he can improve with experience.

16m agoThe Steelers selected Wilson in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 98th overall.
Wilson would have gone much earlier than this if not for his extremely long injury history at North Carolina State. Wilson's right knee and both shoulders have required multiple surgeries at various points, and he heads into the NFL a 24-year-old rookie after spending so much time on the shelf. His strengths as a prospect are obvious -- at 6-foot-4, 233 pounds Wilson is freakishly fast (4.43-second 40-yard dash), and this lends well both to his pass-rushing and his coverage abilities. Wilson will never be the linebacker you want lining up in the middle -- he stands very upright and his arms are bizarrely short, making it easy for guards to grab him first -- but in the open field very few ballcarriers can lose Wilson's pursuit.

Jarrian Jones JAC CBJaguars' Jarrian Jones: Jacksonville adds in third round
26m agoThe Jaguars selected Jones in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 96th overall.
Jones (6-feet, 190 pounds) didn't have as much hype as Florida State teammate and second-round Buffalo selection Renardo Green, but Jones was a good starting corner in his own right for the Seminoles and actually had the better athletic testing of the two corners. Jones' arms are probably too short for press coverage but his 4.38-second 40-yard dash, 39.5-inch vertical and 129-inch broad jump indicate uncommon vertical range. Jones will compete with the likes of Montaric Brown and Darnell Savage for reps behind starting corners Tyson Campbell and Ronald Darby.

Jalyx Hunt 2005 LBEagles' Jalyx Hunt: Philly adds third-round pass rusher
33m agoThe Eagles selected Hunt in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 94th overall.
Hunt (6-foot-4, 252 pounds) was a non-entity as a recruit and had to take a strange path from Cornell (where he arrived as a defensive back) to Houston Christian, and he wasn't especially productive there given the low level of competition. The reason the Eagles gambled on Hunt anyway is that his rawness might be explained by his inexperience, and he otherwise has excellent athletic tools to work with (4.64-second 40-yard dash, 37.5-inch vertical, 128-inch broad jump). Hunt is now in a race against time to build up his skill set before his developmental window closes.

38m agoThe Buccaneers selected McMillan in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 92nd overall.
McMillan might not have as much hype as former Washington teammate Rome Odunze or even Ja'Lynn Polk, but McMillan was about as productive as Odunze and was more productive than Polk prior to McMillan missing roughly two months with a knee injury in 2023. In other words, if McMillan never got hurt then Polk might not have been drafted ahead of McMillan. McMillan (6-foot-1, 197 pounds) demonstrated his skill set by producing alongside the likes of Odunze and Polk at Washington, and his solid combine proved the NFL viability of his athleticism (4.47-second 40, 37-inch vertical). Trey Palmer should not be in the WR3 role much longer for Tampa.

Kamren Kinchens LAR SAFRams' Kamren Kinchens: Joins secondary in Los Angeles
40m agoThe Rams selected Kinchens in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 99th overall.
Kinchens came into the pre-draft process with potential to go much higher, but a disastrous combine performance hurt his stock. At 5-11 and 203 pounds, Kinchens was clocked with a 4.65 40-yard dash and had a broad jump that ranks in the seventh percentile among safeties. The lack of athleticism didn't hurt his on-field performance, however, and that's what the Rams are betting on. He was a First-Team All-American performer in 2022 and finished his career at Miami with 11 interceptions and 26 pass breakups. He has instincts and coverage ability on film, but how it translates to the NFL will be tested immediately by opposing offenses, given the lag in athleticism.

3m agoBassitt (2-4) took the loss Friday against the Dodgers, allowing seven runs on nine hits and three walks over 2.2 innings. He struck out four.
Bassitt allowed a solo home run to Shohei Ohtani in the first inning before imploding in the third, where he allowed another six runs on six hits, with the big blow coming on a Max Muncy three-run homer. It's been a rocky start to the year for the 35-year-old Bassitt -- his ERA is up to 5.64 with a 1.85 WHIP and 30:17 K:BB across six starts (30.1 innings). He'll look to right the ship in his next outing, currently slated for next week against Kansas City.

Emerson Hancock SEA SPMariners' Emerson Hancock: Picks up win
6m agoHancock (3-2) yielded a run on two hits and two walks over six innings Friday, striking out four and earning a win over Arizona.
Hancock turned in five scoreless frames before a solo shot by Kevin Newman in the sixth inning finally put the Diamondbacks on the board. Hancock has now turned in three consecutive quality starts; during that stretch, he's allowed just four earned runs over 18 innings, lowering his season ERA to 5.06 through 26.2 innings. Hancock is currently lined up for a tough home matchup with Atlanta next week.

Ross Stripling OAK SPAthletics' Ross Stripling: Solid against Baltimore
14m agoStripling did not factor into the decision Friday against the Orioles, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out three over 5.2 innings.
Stripling was sharp against a hot Orioles offense, eventually winding up with a no-decision to end a stretch of five straight losses to open the year. The veteran right-hander lowered his ERA to 4.98 with a 1.49 WHIP and 25:8 K:BB through six starts (34.1 innings) this season. Stripling will look for his first win in his next start, currently slated for next week against the Pirates.

29m agoMiller earned the save in Friday's 3-2 win over the Orioles, striking out two in a perfect inning.
Miller delivered another lights-out performance Friday, striking out a pair while stranding the free runner at second in the 10th inning to seal a one-run Oakland victory, earning a second save in as many days. After allowing a pair of runs in his first outing this year, Miller's now held opponents scoreless in his subsequent 11.1 innings while allowing just one hit and one walk in his last seven appearances. The 25-year-old right-hander is up to seven saves on the year as he lowered his ERA to 1.46 with a 0.89 WHIP and an outstanding 18.24 K/9.

1h agoKimbrel blew the save in Friday's loss to the A's, allowing a run on two hits and three walks in one-third of an inning.
Kimbrel allowed all five batters he faced to reach base safely, with the lone out coming when JJ Bleday was thrown out at home trying to score on a wild pitch. While Kimbrel was lucky to escape with just one allowed, he was still charged with his second blown save of the year, the first since his first appearance of the season on April 1. Kimbrel hadn't allowed an earned run in 10 innings coming into Friday, striking out 15 in that span. Overall, the 35-year-old Kimbrel's 7-for-9 in save chances with a 1.59 ERA and 1.06 WHIP through 11.1 innings this season.

1h agoGallen was removed from Friday's game against the Mariners due to right hamstring tightness, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
It's not immediately apparent how severe Gallen's injury is, but the Diamondbacks should offer more information following Friday's contest. The 28-year-old right-hander was able to get through five frames Friday while surrendering three earned runs on three hits and a walk while striking out three batters.

25m agoHardy finished with one point (0-2 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 1-2 FT), one assist and one steal in three minutes during Friday's 101-90 win over the Clippers in Game 3 of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.
Hardy, along with A.J. Lawson and Dwight Powell, secured a handful of minutes down the stretch Friday. With the game well in hand, the Mavericks were able to give their fringe players a rare opportunity to see playoff basketball. This is not something we should expect to see very often moving forward.

Despite a sluggish start to the game, Irving delivered when it mattered, helping the Mavericks to an emphatic victory. Both he and Luka Doncic are at the peak of their powers at the moment, much to the delight of the fans. A repeat performance in Game 4 will see Dallas on the cusp of an impressive first-round victory.

33m agoWashington chipped in 10 points (5-10 FG, 0-4 3Pt), five rebounds, one assist, one block and three steals over 34 minutes before getting ejected from Friday's 101-90 win over the Clippers in Game 3 of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.
Washington was ejected following a scuffle with Russell Westbrook, much to the delight of the home fans. While losing a player is never a good thing, his energy and willingness to not back down proved a hit with the Dallas faithful. Before his premature exit, Washington managed to put together another strong performance. He will look to maintain that energy heading into Game 4 Sunday.

Boston played three minutes in garbage time, something the Clippers will be hoping doesn't repeat itself. Although the scoreline was relatively close, the Mavericks took control early in this one, now holding a 2-1 series lead over a Clippers team in need of a spark.

38m agoGeorge racked up seven points (3-11 FG, 1-6 3Pt), five rebounds and five assists across 30 minutes during Friday's 101-90 loss to the Mavericks in Game 3 of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.
George was non-existent in the loss, putting up his worst performance in quite some time. The Clippers managed to hang around but were never really in the contest. He is going to have to be much better when the two teams line up again Sunday, should the Clippers hope to return home with the series locked up.

Zubac turned in a strong effort Friday, flirting with a double-double. He added a pair of defensive stats for good measure, delivering his best performance of the postseason. Now trailing 1-2 in the series, the Clippers are going to need Zubac to be more consistent moving forward, something he has struggled with this season.

Skinner has struggled so far this postseason, coughing up nine goals on 63 shots in two games. Including his final start of the regular season, he's 1-2-0 with an unsightly .829 save percentage over his last three outings. Skinner went 13-10-2 with an .894 save percentage and a 2.80 GAA in 27 road appearances during the regular season.
