2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Anthony Heygood, OLB, Purdue
Anthony Heygood is a prospect on the rise. After coming to Purdue University as a highly touted running back out of high school, Heygood made the switch to linebacker permanently last season, with results that far exceeded most people's expectations. During the 2005 and 2006 seasons, he saw limited actions on special teams and a few sparse carries in blowout wins. He finished his sophomore season with career totals (at that point) of 13 tackles and 46 yards rushing on 13 carries. After realizing he wouldn't likely crack the depth chart at running back, the Boilermaker coaching staff decided to utilize his athleticism at linebacker. As a junior (in his first season at the position), Heygood registered 81 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 6 passes broken up in coverage, and forced 3 fumbles. He will likely play the weak side linebacker position in the NFL. Heygood has turned out to be not only a solid tackler, but excellent in coverage. His speed allows him to cover tight ends, or even the quickest of Big Ten running backs out of the back field. So far during his senior season Heygood tallied 114 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 1 interception, broke up 7 passes in coverage, and forced a fumble during Purdue's disappointing season.NFL scouts will likely elevate him some, because he's so new to the position and should continue to improve. At this stage of the year, he's probably a late fourth round prospect. If he can shine in workouts, he could make up for a sub par season and get back into third round consideration.
