2014 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Troy Niklas, TE , Notre Dame

Yet another prototypical "Y" tight end out of Notre Dame, Niklas is one of this draft's better in-line blockers who can also contribute as a receiver. A well-balanced player with a long frame and surprising strength, the former outside linebacker is still learning to ins and outs of the position.

Great build and already has good musculature for a tight end. New to the position after making the move to TE during 2012's spring practice. Still developing his technique as a blocker. Good upper body strength. Needs to add power in his lower half. Has trouble anchoring down. Loses ground too easily and gets turned inside-out by power rushers. Decent knee bend. NFL pedigree.

Doesn't box out well considering his size. Needs to work on shielding with his frame in order to create separation to secure the catch. Average hands. Scouts are really focused on what he will be and not what he currently is at the moment. Draft stock soaring because of potential only.

Niklas projects as a late second to third round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Unlikely to take off as a rookie. A better blocker than receiver at this time. Still learning the position and very average with the ball in his hands. Really doesn't compare at all to his predecessor, Tyler Eifert. Niklas has further to go to become an offensive playmaker. A dynasty grab and stash.
