2008 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Kirk Barton, OL, Ohio State

Kirk Barton has spent the last three years anchoring the right side of the Ohio State offensive line. The senior, who according to Bob Hunter of the Columbus Dispatch filed paperwork to gauge his draft status last year, was recently named to the All Big Ten 1st team by both the coaches and the media. Barton is the leader of an offensive line that has allowed just 14 sacks in 12 games so far this season. He, along with his fellow linemen, has led Ohio State to a 200.7 yards per game rushing average. This type of play, as well as his emotional leadership, has OSU right in the thick of the national championship race. Barton possesses good size for a tackle at 6'6" and 300 lbs. Barton is a good run blocker, using his excellent technique to move defenders inside or out, creating holes for "Beanie" and Maurice Wells. However, pass blocking is what will get this Buckeye drafted. Barton has good mobility for a man of his size and relies on his lateral quickness to stay in front of pass rushers. He blocks with good pad level, keeping himself on balance to avoid being beat by speed rushers. Barton also sustains his blocks, keeping on his man until his RB is through the hole, or his QB is out of danger. Barton will be a good pickup for a team in the third or fourth round of this year's draft. Kirk Barton played fairly well in the 2008 Senior Bowl. He was a member of the North team, which struggled a little rushing the ball. The North however, didn't allow a single sack during the game. Barton didn't appear to hurt his stock any, but didn't stand out or improve it much either. He is a solid right tackle who will go in the third or fourth round. Kirk Barton helped himself at Ohio State's pro day in Columbus. The mammoth right tackle came out and ran an impressive 4.95 40 yard dash, much faster than most scouts expected. He did 34 reps on the bench press during the pro day, and showed off good footwork during position drills. Barton had slid some on draft boards, but will likely go in the third or fourth round.
