2008 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Lavelle Hawkins, WR, California
Hawkins has been a steady performer throughout his career at California. He was thought to be a possession type receiver until this year where he has shown excellent speed and the ability to turn a short pass into a home run. He has been one of the few consistent performers for Jeff Tedford's high powered offense this year. Hawkins has really impressed this year with his tremendous burst out of his break, sure hands, and big-play ability. He is a blue collar receiver who will impress any coach with his incredible work ethic. In years past, he has been seen as a slower, sure-handed receiver that could pick up first downs when needed, but little more than a possession receiver; but this year, he has shown a great package of speed and natural hands. Hawkins has really boosted his draft stock with his performance at the Senior Bowl. By most accounts, Hawkins has been the most impressive receiver taking part in the game's practices, showing good deep ball speed and amazing body control. He has made himself a top ten receiver in what is shaping up to be one of the deepest receiver drafts in a long time. Hawkins ran a 4.48 forty yard dash at California's pro day, solidifying his draft status as an early second day fit. He would fit very well in a West Coast offensive system, or in a system such as Mike Martz's pass happy offense predicated on short precise routes.
