2008 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Art Carmody, K, Louisville

If you're looking for a reliable kicker, look no further than Louisville's Art Carmody. As a freshman, Carmody made 77 of 77 PATs, setting an NCAA record and connected on 12 of 14 field goals for a total of 113 points. He missed his first extra points as a sophomore, but he still made 63 of 65 PATs and was just as accurate on field goals, making 14 of 16 for a total of 105 points. His junior year was his best, as he made 21 of 25 field goals and 60 of 60 extra points, totaling 123 points on the way to winning the Lou Groza Award as the nation's top kicker. With the Cardinals' not producing as prolifically on offense as in previous years, Carmody's totals went down a little this season; but when called upon, he continued to get the job done, connecting on 13 of 17 field goals and all 53 of his extra points for a total of 92 points. In his last collegiate game, Carmody broke the NCAA record for scoring by a kicker when he booted a 41-yard field goal in the first quarter of the Cardinals' game against Rutgers on November 29. He capped off his record-setting night by ending off a Louisville comeback with the first game-winning field goal of his career, a 33-yarder with 20 seconds left, to give the Cardinals a 41-38 win. Carmody finished his collegiate career with 433 points, making 60 of 73 (82.2%) of his field goals and 253 of 255 extra points. Surprisingly, 10 of those 13 field goal misses came inside 40 yards, which might not sit well with some, but he can be counted on to make the ones he's supposed to more often than not. On the other hand, Carmody has been deadly from outside of 40 yards, making 14 of 17 kicks from 40+ yards, with a long one of 51 in his junior year. There are only a few kickers drafted, with several getting a chance as a free agent signee. Carmody stands a good chance of being the first kicker drafted, along with Oregon State's Alexis Serna, Wisconsin's Taylor Mehlhaff, and Georgia's Brandon Coutu.
