2008 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Andre Caldwell, WR, Florida
Caldwell didn't have the breakout campaign in 2007 that many predicted after he totaled 57 receptions for 577 yards and six touchdowns in 2006 -- which led to him being voted preseason All-Southeastern Conference entering this past season. Part of the problem for Caldwell was that he missed two games with a sprained right knee that cut into his stats. Part of it was also diminished opportunities, with quarterback Tim Tebow adding a dimension to the running game that the Gators welcomed. Still, 2007 wasn't a bust for Caldwell. He had 56 receptions for 761 yards and seven TDs. He leaves Florida as the school's career record holder in receptions. Scouts love his ability to be dangerous in the open field, with his combination of great quickness and elusiveness. He runs good routes and (most critical for NFL receivers) he has the burst to separate from cornerbacks out of cuts. He has good hands and steps up in clutch situations. Scouts would like to see him strengthen his lower body, which would likely improve his 4.41 speed in the 40-yard dash. He'll need to be more consistent on every down in the NFL. He has the potential to be a big-play threat, which is a trait all teams look for. He projects to be drafted in the second round.
