2008 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Tashard Choice, RB, Georgia Tech

The ACC's leading rusher is not getting as much love from draft pundits as he deserves. After rushing for 1,379 yards and ten touchdowns his senior year, Tashard Choice is positioning himself to be a quality utility back in the NFL. Choice edged out Clemson's James Davis for the second straight year to earn the conference's rushing title, ending his career at Georgia Tech with a total of 3,365 yards in just three years. The 6-1, 211 pound Choice, who spent his freshman year at Oklahoma, brings a lot more to the table than just his ability to run. The asset that will move him up draft boards is his ability to catch. His receiving skills were not always utilized during his career with the Yellow Jackets, but that will change once he is in the NFL. Choice is a bruiser of a back and excels in short yardage situations and that combination of skills will make him a valuable third down back. There are more dynamic backs in this draft who will be premiere rushers in the NFL. However, with multiple back systems becoming more and more popular, Choice will be a valuable pickup for some team. Choice is expected to be drafted in the third round, but some team that is looking for a second ball carrier could go after him sooner. 2/27 Update: Tashard Choice did not run the 40 as fast as he was hoping during the Combine, but he did show some explosive quickness in the cone drills. Overall, it did not do much to improve his stock, but Choice should find a home early in the second day of the draft. 3/21 Update: There are a ton of projected early second day running backs like Jamaal Charles of Texas, Chris Johnson of East Carolina and Kevin Smith of UCF, but Tashard Choice should be right in the mix. Choice might not have the speed of Johnson or the collegiate production of Smith, but he had a solid Pro Day at Georgia Tech and has impressed scouts with his knowledge of the game and his versatility. 4/11 Update: Tashard Choice is not doing anything to diminish his draft stock. In fact, his Combine and Pro Day numbers were better than expected and his production at Georgia Tech speaks for itself. Yet, Choice is not getting the buzz from most draft experts that other running backs are receiving. At best, Choice is a third round selection according to most, but he could end up sneaking into the second round when teams have to decide whether they would have Choice on their team or another running back. The difference will be whether or not NFL teams believe Choice can stay healthy long enough to be a productive player at the next level.
