2008 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Marcellous Johnson, SS, Arkansas State
Marcellous "Tyrell" Johnson was redshirted in 2003 and then officially began his career at free safety in 2004, starting all of the school's eleven games. He recorded 94 tackles, broke up five passes, recovered one fumble and intercepted four passes. Moved to strong safety in 2005, he started all of the team's twelve games -- registered 112 tackles 9two for loss), while intercepting two passes. Johnson was voted to the Sun Belt First Team squad. He graduated in August of 2007 and began to earn Master credit soon after, returning to the team and again starting all of the team's games during his senior campaign where he recorded 94 tackles (four for loss) and picked up six passes. Johnson is an extremely intelligent player who is also strong and thickly built. He is a strictly free safety prospect, with relatively good speed (4.52-40) who is very tough and aggressive. Playing well in zone coverage, he has a smooth backpedal and hip turn and also sports good 9not great) hands. He comes quickly to support the run and is a reliable tackle who wraps up well. He does not get caught looking into the offensive backfield on play actions and he is very confident, but is not a gambler; he is a definite team player. The lack of speed and burst is a real concern, as is his limited range -- he could have over matched his competition but did not. He is also not a big hitter. Johnson is a solid football player from a small school program. He understands the nausea of playing at either safety position. He has the natural talent to make it on the next level, but lack of production will hurt his stock. With better coaching and re-dedication, he could contribute to a franchise as a reserve safety. Projected as a late rounder, Johnson could be a real find for any team looking for special team contributors at that spot.
