2008 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Kory Lichtensteiger, OL, Bowling Green

Lichtensteiger was redshirt in 2003 and then started all twelve games during the 2004 season. He went on to start eleven of the team's twelve games in 2005 and was selected to the All Mid-American Conference second team after a much improved season. Lichtensteiger was a starter in all of the school's contests in 2006, earning All-Mid American Conference First Team honors and was voted team captain prior to the season. He then repeated the honors in 2007, when he was also invited to play in the Senior Bowl. He is a very mature player-- He is already married with one child. He is a very smart player, with better than average football intelligence. Lichtensteiger is also an instinctive player, who can and has made line calls and who is able to get off the ball quickly and into his setup. With good hand use and good bend of his knees, he is able to slide laterally while staying under control and maintaining good balance. Although, he is slow (5.28-40) and has limited athletic ability. With his short arms, Lichtensteiger will struggle against faster defensive linemen. He lacks the ability to make it to the second level without better footwork and more coaching to help his mechanics. Lichtensteiger was a good NFL prospect when the season started, but he did not take the "next step" that many expected in 2007. He has good intangibles and the desire to make it as a backup lineman, but his athletic limitations will push back his playing time. He was projected to be selected in the later stages of the draft, but after his major struggle against faster and stronger d-linemen during practices at the Senior Bowl, he might be pushed out of the draft board completely. He could become a premium free agent and should make a practice roster.
