2008 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Shane Longest, K, Saint Xavier
Longest was a three sport player in high school. He enrolled at St. Xavier in the summer of 2004 and won the starting place kicking spot in 2004. He made two out of seven field goals (FA) and converted 14 of 16 point after touchdown (PAT) during his true freshman campaign. Longest made 10 of 17 FG in 2005, with a long of 52 yards. He also converted 49 of 51 PAT attempts. In 2006, he converted 15 of 18 FG, a long of 47; also making 45 out of 47 PAT attempts. During his senior season, Longest made 27 out of 37 FG with a career long of 55 yards; Also converted 47 of 48 PAT. He also played baseball for the Cougars' varsity team. Longest looks like a pro kicker and he has had a very solid college career. He is a very good athlete for a kicker (4.95-40). Being right footed, he uses a soccer-style kick motion and balls tend to explode off his foot. He has great accuracy between the 40s. Longest is an unusually poised player. Longest is not as well known as other specialists, but he should be drafted. He has the leg drive and required accuracy to make an NFL roster. At the very least, he should become a priority free agent with a real opportunity to make a roster.
