2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

C.J. Spillman, SS, Marshall

C.J. Spillman was a running back in high school. In 2005 as a true freshman, Spillman saw action in eleven games making 38 tackles, one for loss, forced one fumble, and broke three passes while intercepting one. In 2006, he started nine of twelve games recording 79 tackles, four passes broken up and two interceptions (including one returned for a touchdown). He also forced one fumble. During the 2007 season, Spillman recorded 131 tackles with six passes broken up. He forced three fumbles. His play earned him a slot on the Second Team All USA Conference. He is not big, but is strong. A very good athlete. Is a very good tackler. Good open field tackling technique. Has speed (4.52), but tends to play at a much slower pace. Plays good in zones, but has trouble covering fast receivers one-on-one. Should have produced more, but did not. Thus, the level of competition is more of a factor on him. Needs to improve his attitude. Spillman is an interesting athlete. There's a real concern about his dedication to the game, but if he improves his work ethic he could be a sleeper. On talent alone, he projects as a mid-to-lower fifth rounder.
