2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Ryan Purvis, TE, Boston College
In 2007 (his first year as a starter for Boston College), Ryan Purvis caught 54 passes for 553 yards and four touchdowns. But that was with Matt Ryan throwing him passes. For his senior season he does not have such a quality quarterback getting him the ball. However, that does mean the Eagles will look to Purvis as a safety valve more often and he should put up decent numbers during the 2008 campaign. Obviously Purvis can handle catching the ball. At 6-4 and 260 pounds, he is a big target and he has an NFL ready body right now. His blocking is decent, but he will be drafted as a passing catching tight end. Even if the Reinholds, Pennsylvania product has another big year and earns All-ACC honors again, Purvis will need a big Senior Week and combine to move past some of the higher profile tight ends like Travis Beckum and Chase Coffman on NFL team's big board. Purvis can work his way into the top three tight ends, but this is a pretty good year for tight ends with Beckum, Coffman, Brandon Pettigrew, Bear Pascoe and Darius Hill all seniors. If he can outperform those guys at the combine, he will deserve to be a first or second round selection. 12/25 Update: It was not the Boston College offense that got the team into the ACC Championship game. Quarterback Chris Crane only averaged 156.5 passing yards per game. He only threw for ten touchdowns. That does not leave much room for the tight end to put up good numbers, and Purvis did not put up good numbers at all. He caught just 20 passes for 147 yards and no touchdowns. With the solid crop of tight ends in this class, Purvis will likely have to wait until day two to hear his name called.
