Rico McCoy Scouting Report

2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Rico McCoy, OLB, Tennessee
As a sophomore, McCoy missed Tennessee's bowl game due to academic ineligibility. Since then, however, the linebacker has said and done all the right things and it has paid off in his performance both on and off the field. He finished with 87 total tackles in 2008 and was named a Second Team All-SEC player by both the media and the SEC's coaches. McCoy was even better in his final season in Knoxville, recording 117 total tackles--32 more than any other Volunteer defender. Again he earned Second-Team conference honors. Whether or not the success translates to the next level, however, appears to be questionable. McCoy stands at just 6'1' and 220 pounds, far from ideal for a linebacker. He needs to put on some serious pounds and muscle if he wants to be a starter -- and a Day 1 draft pick -- in the NFL. McCoy does, however, have impressive speed to make up for his relative lack of size. He has been clocked as fast as 4.52 in the 40-yard dash, although sometimes he is even too fast and too intense (often overrunning plays). McCoy, who redshirted in 2005, did well to return to school for a senior campaign rather than turning pro last year. Still, his draft stock did not see major improvement and it won't until he bulks up. McCoy has a chance to sneak into Day 1 based on his potential, but for now it looks like he will probably go off the board sometime on Day 2 of the 2010 draft.
