2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Demetrius Byrd, WR, LSU
Byrd played two seasons as a JUCO standout before transferring to LSU, where he has emerged as a feared force in the SEC. The wide receiver was named to the Pre-season All-SEC Second-Team by both the conference's coaches and the media. Byrd has not put up spectacular numbers, however, in one and a half seasons in Baton Rouge, in part due to the fact that the Tigers run a conservative offense and rarely air it out down the field. When they do, they go to Byrd; and for a good reason. Speed is his biggest attribute (he can run under 4.4. in the 40-yard-dash) so he is a dangerous deep threat. The wide receiver averaged 17.7 yards per reception as a junior in 2007 and is averaging 15.3 through the first six games of this season. Byrd also is a nice red-zone target at 6'2'' (and 195 pounds); he hauled in seven touchdown passes last year and has three scores so far in 2008. His blend of size and speed and propensity for the endzone should convince NFL scouts that he is capable of putting up even better stats at the next level. Byrd has dropped a few balls this season, but in general his hands are considered very good. There are no foreseeable red flags around him, so Byrd could go as early as the second round in the 2009 draft.
