2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person

Gerald McRath, OLB, Southern Miss

McRath started nine out of fourteen games during his freshman season, going on to record 104 tackles (59 of them solo), 2 sacks, one pass broken up (PBU) and forced two fumbles. He was named on several publications' all start teams as an All American Freshman Team member. He started twelve of thirteen games in the 2007 campaign, making 139 tackles (71 solo), with 11.5 of them for loss, 4 sacks, 3 PBU and one force fumble. McRath, a junior, is blessed with a big frame and large wingspan. He is very athletic and moves well (4.59). More quick than explosive, McRath is able to cover a lot of territory and is good in coverage. He is able to recognize pass plays early and moves well into coverage, which makes him excellent on the second level. He is somewhat on the slim side, so he needs to add bulk to compete on a regular basis against the "big boys". He is not a good run stuffer, and he will sometimes shy away from contact. He does not shed blockers very well, and having been dominated on a lower level he is still talented enough to move forward in his development. McRath is a very interesting prospect. As of today, he is probably looking towards declaring and coming out next year. If he does, he is slated to become a late second to early third round pick.
