2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Rodney Ferguson, RB, New Mexico
Ferguson was redshirted in 2004 and saw limited action in the 2005 season. All this changed in 2006 when Ferguson emerged as the Lobos' top rusher. That season Ferguson rushed for 1,309 yards on 252 attempts (4.9 per carry) with 7 TDs. He also caught 28 balls for 291 yards and 2 TDs. Following his successful sophomore campaign, Ferguson had a solid junior effort in 2007 when he rushed for 1,177 yards (4.0) with 13 TDs. He also grabbed 18 passes for 264 yards and 1 TD. This season, Ferguson is again the Lobos' top rusher, rushing for 1,105 yards (5.0) with 13 TDs. Ferguson is a very good mid-level college player who, at times, takes over a game. He is solidly built with an impressive upper body definition. His engine is always moving. Big and soft hands enable Ferguson to catch almost anything thrown to him. Ferguson plays his best against the top teams as he tends to play at the level of his team's competition. He is not very athletic and he is also slower than his 40 time indicates (4.58). He also does not make plays happen. Ferguson is a good mid-level college player who lacks the speed to be a playmaker. He has desire and passion for the game, plus he is a very bright young man; two traits that will earn him a roster invitation by someone. He projects as a seventh rounder now, but with a good workout he could move up.
