2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Corey Lewis, RB, Northern Iowa
Lewis began his Panthers career in 2005 as a redshirt freshman. Playing in 15 games, Lewis managed to rush for only 282 yards on 52 carriers (5.4 per carry) and 2 TDs. In 2006, the Nebraska product rushed for 894 yards in 134 attempts (6.7) with 10 TDs. During his junior season, Lewis rushed for a career best 1,513 yards on 258 carriers (5.9) and scored 16 TDs. In 2008 (and with one game remaining on the Panthers' regular season), Lewis has already passed the 1000 yard plateau (He has rushed for 1,025 yards (5.1) with 8 TDs). Lewis is a strong north/south runner who darts in and out of holes with ease. Not overly strong, Lewis is still a load to bring down. He is more quick than fast (4.57) and moves well in the open field -- Consistently turning the corner. With a good pair of hands, Lewis runs crisp routes. However, he is not a physical inside runner; He needs to strength his upper body and he tends to wear down late in the games. Lewis is a fringe prospect who needs a great last game, plus a marvelous post season campaign in order to hear his name called in April. He does have several good traits, but does not excel in any one area. He could make an NFL roster, but the chances are low.
