2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Ron Brace, DT, Boston College

B.J. Raji is getting most of the media attention heading up to the NFL Draft, but his former partner in the interior of the defensive line at Boston College deserves some accolades. Brace had four relatively productive years with the Eagles, culminating in a senior season in which he tallied 27 tackles, 11 tackles-for-loss and three sacks. He put up nearly similar numbers during the 2007 campaign. Brace is not quite as big as Raji, but he is no small man either at 6-3 and 324 pounds. He has received plenty of praise for his quickness off the line and that is where he separates himself from most other defensive tackles. He also has a solid technique and will be technically ready to contribute right away. The problem with Brace is his injury history. He has avoided major injuries, but he did miss some part of a game during the 2008 campaign with a toe injury and struggled all year with a nagging back problem. All those issues should be behind him, but NFL teams will want to know for sure. Brace will be at the combine in February and he can work himself into a solid and safe second round selection with a good showing. 4/16 Update: Brace did have a solid combine and should be gone by the end of the first day of the draft. Brace has surpassed quite a few fellow defensive tackles on most draft boards and this is a position that seems to be in need this year. That could catapult Brace into the early second round if some team wants to grab one of the top defensive tackles in the class.
