2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Captain Munnerlyn, CB, South Carolina

Munnerlyn is leaving South Carolina after his junior season, and it's coming as a controversial decision; plenty of people involved think the cornerback should have returned for his senior year under Gamecock coach Steve Spurrier. After all, Munnerlyn's 2008 campaign was a bit of a disappointment. He had two interceptions as a freshman and three as a sophomore, but had no picks as a junior. Munnerlyn blamed it on South Carolina playing more zone defense last year. Whatever the case, it was not the season Munnerlyn had in mind after being named to the All-SEC First Team by the conference's coaches in 2007. Production--or lack thereof--is not the only question mark surrounding Munnerlyn heading into the 2009 NFL Draft. He will be grossly over matched by receivers at the next level, standing just 5'9' and 185 pounds. He will be a project at cornerback, but he could be a major asset on special teams. Munnerlyn consistently runs in the low 4.4s in the 40-yard-dash and he has reportedly gone as low as 4.30. He needs to run near that latter mark if he wants to overcome his physical limitations. If Munnerlyn performs well at the combine, a third-round selection is not beyond the realm of possibility.
