2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Cary Harris, CB, USC

The Pacoima, CA product enrolled at USC in the spring of 2005. Playing in twelve games during his freshman season, Harris posted 9 tackles, 1 Pass broken up and with 0 INT. In 2006, Harris played in all of the Trojan's thirteen games, finishing with 48 tackles, 4 PBU and only 1 INT. He put up similar numbers (48-7-1) during his junior campaign. His senior season was his best one, where he recorded 38 tackles with 6 PBU and a career high, 3 INTs. He was an honorable All PAC-10 selection. At 6'0 and 184, Harris has the perfect body to play cornerback in the NFL. Harris is a very good athlete with a bright football mind. He has good straight line speed (4.47), but has trouble moving laterally. He does not recover well once beaten and has bitten on too many play fakes. Harris' pass/run recognitions skills are not there yet and he does not support the run with tenacity. There is a tendency to shy away from contact. A good, not great, open field tackler, he needs to add bulk and work on refining his backpedaling technique. Harris is a very interesting player who will perform better on individual workouts than on the football field. He does not have the instinct to play the position right now. He will need more coaching and refinement, but the skills are there for him to be a productive backup player in the NFL. He looks to be a mid-to-late fifth rounder at this time.
