2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Corvey Irvin, DT, Georgia
Injuries killed Georgia, college football's pre-season No. 1, in 2008. If one player benefited individually from the carnage, it was Irvin. The defensive tackled filled in for starter Jeff Owens and while Irvin didn't put up huge numbers, he at least put himself on scouts' radar screens. That's just about all a former JUCO player can ask for, especially since Irvin didn't start a single game in 2007 (his first season in Athens). He earned an invite to the Senior Bowl despite meager production, and that's where Irvin really started to help his draft stock. Right now he looks like a fourth or fifth-rounder, but that can be improved with an impressive NFL Combine. Irvin should be able to showcase his athleticism and quickness, and he has run under 5.00 in the 40-yard dash. Of course he also enters the next level with plenty of question marks, led by the simple issue of lack of production on the field. Obviously he has only had one year in which to make a big impact, so Irvin will be a project at the next level due to his general shortcomings in experience. He could also use some time to bulk up, which he should be able to do considering he has great height at 6'4', but is not even 300 pounds. It will be interesting to see where Irvin ends up going in April's draft because it's clear he has the potential for significant improvement. Whether that materializes into something remains to be seen.
