2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Corey Wootton, DE, Northwestern

Corey Wootton is yet another Big Ten prospect coming back from a serious injury. Wootton suffered a knee injury during the fourth quarter of Northwestern's bowl game and had off-season surgery to fix the damage. He is a four year starter who has improved every year on the field. In 37 career games (leading into this season), Wootton has tallied 132 tackles, 32 tackles for loss, 15.5 sacks, 3 interceptions, forced 2 fumbles, and blocked 3 kicks. He has started slowly this season as Northwestern has used him sparingly while he continues to heal. Wootton finished his final collegiate season with 21 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, and blocked another kick. When he is 100 percent, Wootton is extremely quick for his size. He will also provide whichever team drafts him with a lot of versatility. At 6'7" Wootton is a nightmare for opposing kickers and punters, and can be a real asset to a special teams unit. He is big enough to play 3-4 defensive end, and also quick enough to play left end in the 4-3. Northwestern also uses him at defensive tackle in a 4 man line during passing downs. He provides an interior pass rush and can get his long arms up in the middle, closing off passing lanes for the quarterback. Because he is not an elite speed rusher, he likely won't be drafted until the late second or early third rounds.
