2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Sergio Render, OG, Virginia Tech
Off-season shoulder surgery has not slowed down Sergio Render. Ever since he stepped foot on Virginia Tech's campus, Render has been starting at one of the offensive guard spots. During his freshman campaign he earned the starting right guard job and he has never given it up, although he has moved to the left guard spot for his senior season. At 6-3 and 319 pounds, Render is a big guard who has turned into a great leader on the line. The Hokies had some questions about their ground game heading into the 2009 season after projected starter Darren Evans went down with an ACL injury. All the Hokies had to turn to were inexperienced players. Redshirt freshman Ryan Williams is easily the Atlantic Coast Conference's top rusher six weeks into the 2009 season and Williams has Render to largely thank for that success. Heading into the 2009 season Render was considered by most as the nation's top offensive guard. His size and versatility are a big bonus and he should be off the board by the second round -- barring a major injury. Render could even play his way into the first round -- which is tough for any guard -- if he keeps going at this pace. 1/17 Update: Render had a good senior season, but most scouts have yet to pay him much attention. Render had a superb bowl game against Tennessee, but for some reason he is still not garnering too much national attention. At this point it looks like Render will have to make a name for himself during the workouts leading up to the draft in order to be considered a second or even third round option.
