2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Jon Asamoah, OG, Illinois
Jon Asamoah might be the best offensive linemen that no one has ever heard of. He isn't receiving much attention due to Illinois' struggles as a team, but when scouts finally see him work out many are likely to fall in love with the senior guard. Asamoah has started 22 consecutive games for the Illini and is one of the few bright spots on a dismal team. He is a very good pass blocker, using his quick feet to keep in front of defenders. His best asset however, is his tenacity as a run blocker. At 6'5" and 315 pounds, he has the power to blow smaller tackles off the line during running plays. According to Illinois' football biography, Asamoah has run the 40 yard dash in a staggering 5.06 seconds. This is the type of time that will rocket him up draft boards if it can be reproduced at the combine. The true test of Asamoah's draft status will be the Senior Bowl. Because he plays as part of a weak offensive line, it is important for scouts to see him play as part of a talented unit and hold his own. If he can play effectively against some of the nations other top players, he could vault himself into the second round. Jon Asamoah looked very good during Senior Bowl practices, but measured with the shortest arms of any offensive lineman in attendance. He is not as physically imposing as some of the other top guard prospects, which may hurt his stock. He is however hardworking and technically sound. Asamoah is most likely a late second or early third round pick in this year's NFL draft. Jon Asamoah did not run at the combine in February, but it has not hurt his stock much. He did have shorter arms than expected, which may sway a few teams away from him. At this point, he is likely to slip into the mid third round range come draft day.
