2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Harry Coleman, SS, LSU

Coleman is one of the more experienced players in college football, and he even has valuable experience at multiple positions. Although he was not a starter until his junior season at LSU, Coleman played in all 26 games as a freshman and sophomore (after redshirting in 2005). As the starting strong safety for the Tigers in 2008, he led the team with 71 tackles. In part due to his impressive speed, Coleman was moved to outside linebacker for his senior campaign; he did not disappoint. After 12 regular-season games -- all of which he started -- Coleman had recorded 77 tackles (43 solo), good for third on the team. He was second on the team with nine tackles for loss and he also had four sacks. Coleman has played in 51 straight games for LSU and has made 25 consecutive starts. Coleman stands at 6'2' and 206 pounds (not exactly the standard size for a linebacker), so it is no surprise that he began in Baton Rouge as a safety. However, he has been clocked as fast as 4.42 in the 40-yard dash and coach Les Miles wanted that kind of speed at outside linebacker. Unless he spends a couple of seasons in the NFL as a backup while adding some serious bulk, Coleman will move back to strong safety at the next level. Playing outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense is not out of the question, but for now it appears far from likely. Coleman is a sound tackler (and a typical hard-hitting safety), and he is solid in pass coverage as well. Scouts will love his speed, so although he is not set in stone at any specific defensive position, Coleman should go off the board in the third or fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
