2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Jeron Mastrud, TE, Kansas State
Jeron Mastrud may not put up huge numbers like some other tight ends around the nation, but he has proven to be a well balanced player who can block and provide a large target in the red zone. Right away Mastrud stepped into a significant role. As a freshman he started nine games and caught 17 passes for 235 yards, but more importantly he helped pave the way for a decent ground game. As a sophomore Mastrud continued to improve his blocking and pass catching skills. On the year he caught 30 passes for 316 yards. It was not until 2008 when Mastrud really became a big receiving threat, especially in the end zone. For a 6-6, 253 pound tight end, his usefulness in the red zone and on third down is obvious. He has good hands and should be a consistent receiving threat when given the opportunity. In 2008 Mastrud ended the season catching 38 passes for 435 yards and two scores. In 2009 those numbers slipped to 21 catches for 233 yards and a touchdown. Mastrud is a very well balanced tight end who ended up not fitting in too well in the passing scheme at Kansas State. He is a much better pass catcher than his numbers indicate and he is a fine blocker. There are better blockers out there and better receiving tight ends, but Mastrud can do it all and will be a good mid-round selection for some NFL team.
