2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Lindsey Witten, DE, Connecticut

Lindsey Witten was pretty much a role player for Connecticut through much of his career. However, that does not mean he was not productive. As a freshman Witten played in all 12 games and started the last six contests for the Huskies. He ended that season with 39 tackles, 6.0 tackles-for-loss and 3.5 sacks; that would be his most productive campaign until 2009. In 2007 he only totaled 23 tackles, 4.5 tackles-for-loss and two sacks. In 2008 the tackle number slipped to 19, but he did record five sacks. The Cleveland, Ohio native does possess good size at 6-5 and 260 pounds (and he keeps getting bigger and stronger). In the Big East that was good enough to simply roll over some opponents. That extra strength, combined with more of an opportunity to play and three years of experience, led to a superb senior season. Witten wrapped up the regular season with 41 tackles, 13.0 tackles-for-loss and 11.5 sacks. Witten is under the radar right now, but with a little work he could turn into a decent defensive end at the next level. For now, Witten needs have a good Bowl against South Carolina to start turning some heads and increase his draft stock. 2/21 Update: Witten did not have a great bowl game, but he did tally four tackles, including a tackle for a loss of eight yards. Overall the UConn defense did a great job against South Carolina and Witten certainly deserves some of the credit. In the East-West Shrine Game Witten was viewed with mixed results. At times he was stiff and unable to beat the opposition around the edge. Yet, there were worse performances by defensive ends in the practices leading up to the Shrine Game and Witten should be drafted in the fourth or fifth round.
