2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Alterraun Verner, CB, UCLA

If there is an award, Alterraun Vernor has won it. As a freshman he was a first-team Freshman All-America by multiple sources and by his senior season he was First-Team All-Pac 10 (and even a first-team All-America nominee by some media outlets). Vernor has always been an extremely productive cornerback for UCLA. As a freshman he totaled 59 tackles and picked off two passes. The following year he tallied 75 tackles and four interceptions. His numbers were amazingly consistent as an upperclassman, tallying 73 tackles and two interceptions in 2008 and 72 tackles and five interceptions during his senior campaign. Vernor was listed as 5'11 while at UCLA, but that proved to be a little generous. At the NFL Combine he measured out at 5'10. While he is a superb athlete who has all the quickness that any team could want, his flat out speed is not extraordinary. His lack of size is an issue. He will use his speed to blitz off the edge quite effectively, but he will have some trouble breaking off blocks and is not always the most efficient tackler. Vernor's instincts cannot be taught and once all the taller corners are off the board, Vernor will look very attractive. He has a ton of experience in a pass happy league and was tested week in and week out for four years with the Bruins. His positive showing in the East-West Shrine Game and the NFL Combine should move him up to the fourth round at the latest.
