2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Dexter Davis, OLB, Arizona State

Davis had a productive three year career for the Sun Devils before tailing off dramatically this past year. He was redshirted in 2005 and began playing outside in 2006, recording 40 tackles (10.5 for loss) with 6 sacks. He had another solid outing in 2007 posting 33 tackles (13.5 TFL) while registering 10.5 sacks. His junior campaign saw him almost duplicate his career average (40 tackles, 15 TFL with 11 sacks), but he dramatically cooled off during 2009: posted career low in tackles (23), TFL (6) and sacks (3.5). Strength: Four year starter with tons of experience playing against some of the best programs in the nation. Has good height. Is strong and powerful. Usually plays with good leverage. Has long arms and does a good job maintaining separation. Good pass/run recognition skills. Has a good, initial move. Good overall tackler at the point. Weakness: Is not a great athlete. Does not change direction well and struggles in coverage. Lacks top end speed (4.80est) and burst off the line. Limited range. Will struggle at the second level. Can have trouble covering athletic TEs and RBs. Must use his hands better. Davis would better fit a 3-4 alignment where his lack of athleticism can be concealed. He was very productive early on in his college career before a sub par 2009 season. His lack of production during his senior campaign, coupled with his pedestrian speed and agility, makes Davis a borderline draft prospect. If he is taken, it will most likely not be until the later stages of Day 2.
