2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Stephan Virgil, CB, Virginia Tech

Stephan Virgil sat behind some talented corners at Virginia Tech and still managed to make an impact as a sophomore and earn a starting job as a junior. During his junior campaign he posted 43 tackles and picked off six passes. Virgil missed a couple games early in the 2009 season, but he is still productive when he is on the field. The problem is nobody throws to him anymore and the corner on the other side of the field -- Rashad Carmichael -- is racking up the interceptions this year. The story was reversed last year. Macho Harris was the superstar corner and that allowed Virgil to get a lot of opportunities to make plays. Harris ended up slipping down to the fifth round last year and Virgil may have a similar fate if he does not start putting up better numbers during his senior season. However, even without great numbers on what is a very balanced Virginia Tech defense (especially in the secondary), Virgil can separate himself from other cornerbacks at the NFL combine. Virgil is not the senior leader of the defense (or even the secondary) with free safety Kam Chancellor and rover Dorian Porch on the team, so Virgil needs to have a good showing at the combine to show the NFL that he is a quality player on his own. 2/1 Update: Virgil had a fine senior season, ending up with 36 tackles, 6.0 tackles-for-loss, one sack and one interception in ten games. Yet, he has still not separated himself from the rest of the mid-round cornerbacks. He failed to do so at the East-West Shrine Game in January and he will have to do it at the NFL Combine in February.
