2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Jeff Cottam, TE, Tennessee

Cottam was almost entirely a blocking tight end throughout his career as a Tennessee Volunteer. After redshirting in 2005, Cottam played in 13 games as a freshman in 2006 (mostly on special teams and in short-yardage blocking situations). He caught four passes including one touchdown in 2007, but he recorded no stats in 2007 following a broken leg sustained in spring practice. Cottam wrapped up his career with seven receptions for 60 yards and two touchdowns. He is, however, a skilled blocker. Cottam has great size at 6'8', 260 pounds and he can get open for the occasional pass when necessary. A major factor on the offensive line, Cottam helped Tennessee allow fewer sacks than any other SEC team last season. Running back Montario Hardesty chalked up 1,345 yards behind the stout front line. Cottam is not a highly-touted prospect simply because he is an unproven pass-catcher (and he also comes with an injury history), but teams in need of a blocking tight end--especially teams that use two tight end sets--will take a hard look at him. As a result, there is a chance Cottam could get drafted as opposed to becoming an undrafted free agent.
