2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Mike Neal, DT, Purdue
Mike Neal is the latest in a recent trend of very solid Purdue defenders available in the NFL Draft. He saw action early during his career at Purdue, playing in 22 games his first two seasons. During that span he tallied 31 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, and batted down 2 passes. He really started to turn up the production as a junior when he notched 33 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and 5.5 sacks in 12 games. He finished his senior year with 35 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and forced a fumble. Neal has very good size for a defensive tackle at 6'4" and 302 pounds, and is much quicker than opposing linemen expect. He also has a variety of very effective pass rushing moves from the inside that often collapse the pocket enough to cause bad throws from the opposition. Neal should test very well athletically at February's NFL Combine, but could improve his draft stock substantially if he shows he could also play defensive end in a 3-4 defensive scheme. This would increase the number of teams coveting his services tremendously. Neal is competing at the East-West Shrine Game in January, giving him an opportunity to impress scouts even further. Neal is likely a third round pick at this point, but could improve his stock with a solid offseason. Mike Neal was possibly the most dominating defensive lineman during the week of practice at the East-West Shrine Game. He consistently beat offensive linemen off the ball and looked even quicker than he had at Purdue. He registered 2 tackles during the game, and because he can play in the 4-3 or 3-4, may have raised his stock into the late second round. Neal was again impressive during Senior Bowl week, showing his quickness off the ball during practices. He tallied 1 tackle and 0.5 tackles for loss during the game, and continues to be a late second or early third round prospect.
