2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Terrell Skinner, FS, Maryland

Eric Berry, Taylor Mays and Earl Thomas will dominate the free safety market early in the 2010 NFL Draft, but Terrell Skinner has the opportunity to emerge as a decent option in the mid-rounds. Skinner has only been a productive member of the Terps since the 2008 campaign when he started 11 games. After redshirting in 2005 as a wide receiver, Skinner barely played as a defensive back in 2006. By 2007 he was a regular on special teams and played a sparse role as a reserve safety and only totaled 12 tackles on the season. By 2008, the 6-3 free safety was a starter and he began the season very strong, recording his first career interception in the season opener. Despite missing two games with an ankle injury, Skinner still ranked sixth on the team with 63 tackles and added three pass break-ups. Skinner emerged as a leader of the secondary during his senior season and ended up ranking third on the squad with 67 tackles. Skinner will not be a first or second round draft pick and is not particularly great at one thing, but he has the skills to emerge as a decent safety in the NFL. His draft stock is not too high right now, but he does have the opportunity to surpass some other free safeties that are considered mid-rounders; that could move Skinner up into the third or fourth round.
