2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Dorian Porch, SS, Virginia Tech

In a secondary that consists of free safety Kam Chancellor, corner Stephan Virgirl and emerging junior cornerback Rashad Carmichael, rover Dorian Porch is often overlooked. Porch spent 2005 on the sidelines and was limited in playing time in 2006 and 2007. During the 2008 campaign he optimistically stepped into the starting rover position and started the last nine games of the season, ending the year with 48 tackles. Porch won the starting job in 2009 due to his experience from the prior season. Porch has certainly become more consistent during the spring and early in the 2009 campaign, but he does not really project well to the NFL. Porch is only 5-11 and 209 pounds and has spent his entire career at Virginia Tech preparing to play the rover position. He simply does not have the size to play strong safety in the NFL and lacks the cover skills to be a shutdown corner. That does not mean Porch cannot be a valuable player in the NFL. He is very strong and can certainly play some safety at the next level, but most teams will shy away from him due to his size. That will probably keep him out of the first few rounds of the draft, but he could be a late round steal. 2/1 Update: There has not been much buzz about Porch lately. Part of that is due to all of the other players in the Virginia Tech secondary that have stolen the spotlight and part of that is because Porch's size is still a big issue. Still lacking an invite to the NFL Combine, Porch might have to show off his skills at individual workouts.
