2011 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

James Carpenter, OT, Alabama

After two seasons at junior college, Carpenter became an immediate force for Alabama. He started all 27 games at left tackle in his two-year career with the Crimson Tide. Carpenter helped lead Alabama to the BCS National Championship as a junior and was named a Second Team All-SEC performer by the Associated Press. He earned the same honor last season and was even named to the First Team as a senior by the conference's coaches. Last season, Carpenter and the offensive line paved the way for the Tide to rank 22nd nationally in total offense and 29th in rushing.

Standing at 6'4'' and 320 pounds, Carpenter is a good athlete who has been clocked as fast as 5.16 in the 40-yard dash. He possesses good quickness, but whether or not he can stay in front of the best defensive ends in the NFL remains to be seen. Carpenter projects as a right tackle or guard at the next level. He needs to improve on his explosiveness off the ball, as he can often get beat with a quick step from an opposing defensive end. Still, Carpenter has experience, durability, and should be a safe pick in the upcoming draft. Look for him to go off the board sometime during the third round.
