2011 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Joe Torchia, TE, Virginia

Joe Torchia does not have a lot of game tape to look at and he will not be healthy for most of the workouts leading up to the draft. The 6-6 tight end spent the 2006 season as a redshirt. In 2007 he spent most of his time on special teams and made the occasional appearance in the goal line package. He ended the year without catching a pass. In 2008 his role expanded and was used quite a bit in two tight end sets, but yet again did not catch a pass. A shoulder injury caused him to miss five games, thus limiting his playing time.

By 2009 Torchia's size was finally being utilized by the Virginia offense. Torchia started ten games and caught 15 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns. During his senior season Torchia started out strong, catching nine passes for 113 yards in just three contests. However, in the third game, Torchia suffered a nasty shoulder injury and that ended his collegiate career.

Torchia is a solid blocking tight end who has pretty good hands. He simply has not been on the field enough to show off his pass catching skills. Unfortunately for Torchia, his shoulder injury is expected to keep him out of action for four to five months. That means he will miss any postseason workouts leading up to the draft in January and could be out well into February. An invitation to the NFL combine is now unlikely and Torchia will need to be healthy enough at some point prior to the draft in order to at least workout for scouts before the draft. Even if he is healthy enough to workout before the draft, it is unlikely Torchia will be at full strength after spending so much time recovering from the injury. That will likely leave Torchia out of the draft, but he is talented enough to sneak into the late rounds or make a roster as an undrafted free agent.

Prediction: 6th Round

anyone who saw the usc game knows this kid is loaded with potential. if he had gone to a different school like ohio state, or miami everyone would know his name. when all is said and done he will get drafted. he fought alot of odds especially playing at haldane high school and moving on to queen of peace high school in new jersey. get a tape of the usc game he dominated his defensive opponent on every play. i was at the game uva needed to throw him the ball more and they could have beat usc instead missed field goals and a fake punt that was an officials mistake sealed their fate. look at the rest of their season without him he will be missed at uva.
