2011 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Mario Butler, CB, Georgia Tech

Mario Butler has slowly built his way from a special teams player as a freshman to the mainstay in Georgia Tech's secondary. Back in 2007 the 6-1 cornerback saw most of his action on special teams and recorded a mere three tackles on the season. Despite his lack of experience, Butler was thrown into the starting lineup as a sophomore. That may not have appeared to be a good idea at first, but Butler improved with every game and ended the season as a solid corner. On the year he registered 41 tackles, 3.5 tackles-for-loss, one interception and four pass break-ups.

As an upperclassman Butler continued to improve. As a junior he started all 14 games and tallied 45 tackles, 4.5 tackles-for-loss and two interceptions. Heading into the 2010 campaign Butler needed to become a leader of the secondary. He has done just that. Through the regular season, Butler has continued to be a staple at one of the cornerback spots and has forced most opponents to avoid throwing in his direction. On the year Butler has tallied a career high 47 tackles and added an interception return for a touchdown.

Butler has decent size and speed, but is not the biggest or fastest corner in this class. His overtaking of the leadership role in the secondary has boosted his stock, but right now Butler is a mid-round selection and it will take some surprising workouts for him to work his way into the second or third round.
