2011 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Colby Whitlock, DT, Texas Tech

For his efforts as a freshman, Colby Whitlock made just about everybody's Freshman All-America team. The 6-3, 294 pound defensive tackle started his freshman season on the bench, but quickly moved into the starting lineup and stayed there for the final ten games of the season. On the year he tallied 47 tackles, 8.5 tackles-for-loss and 2.0 sacks. The 2008 season saw more accolades for Whitlock as he was named an All-Conference honorable mention by both the AP and the Big 12 coaches.

Whitlock's production dropped a little in 2009, but he has done quite well in 2010 under the new coaching regime. Through ten games he has 45 tackles, 8.5 tackles-for-loss, 2.0 sacks and one quarterback hurry. While Whitlock may never put up huge numbers, he does a good job of disrupting the opposing backfield and can collapse the pocket and force the quarterback to make a bad pass.

At 294 pounds, Whitlock does not have the size of a traditional defensive tackle in the NFL. However, he has a big frame and can certainly add some weight and strength. If he can prove to NFL scouts that he has the ability to hit the weight room and continue to improve his strength while staying relatively nimble, he could be a fourth or fifth round selection.
