2011 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU

Peterson is the best cornerback prospect for the 2011 NFL Draft. The LSU Tiger just completed his junior season in Baton Rouge, but he is--not surprisingly--leaving early. And why not? The guy can do it all. Peterson was arguably the best shutdown corner in college football and he has been clocked as fast as 4.30 in the 40-yard dash.

This season he had four interceptions (which he returned for 134 yards), six pass breakups, a blocked kick, and 1.5 sacks. Peterson averaged 29.1 yards on 32 kick returns and averaged 16.1 yards on 26 punt returns, two of which he returned for scores. He won the Jim Thrope Award, the Chuck Bednarik Award, and was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year and SEC Special Teams Player of the Year by the conference's coaches.

His combination of size and speed really is incredible, as he stands at 6'1'' and 222 pounds. Peterson can be physical at the line of scrimmage while also matching opponents' best receivers stride for stride. With experience to boot, he heads into the NFL with basically no question marks. Peterson should be the first cornerback off the board and that will likely come with one of the first three overall picks.

Prediction: 1st Round

as a 49er fan i feel he fills our deepest need because he would/could shut down the other team's best receiver allowing that extra fraction of time to allow our d-line to get to the qb and lbackers get to chase the ball instead of getting tangled up in coverage

Patrick Peterson should either go number 2, 3, or 7 in the draft. I have him going number 7 to the 49ers even though he is (in my opinion) the best player in the draft. Corners never go number 1, and a defensive end and / or tackle will be probably taken numbers 2 and three. Teams 4-6 have more important needs than a cornerback. That leaves him perfectly at number 7 to San Francisco. Some teams fear that he will have to move to safety, but i disagree. I see him being a shut down corner, and a Devin Hester-like returner. He is a steal at number 7, and San Francisco should pray for him to fall right into their laps.

This should be the guy the Detroit Lions are dreaming about. If he's available he would fill a major need and most likely be the highest rated player on their board so he would be a no-brainer. That being said, they've won three in a row and appear to be out of PP's range.
Champ Bailey is said to be tired of the constant change in Denver and he looks to be on the way out. It will be interesting to see how their next coach approaches the draft, Peterson would have to be on their radar as well.
