2011 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Demarcus Van Dyke, CB, Miami

Demarcus Van Dyke has never been a full-time starter at Miami, but during his four years at there he did manage to total 21 starting appearances. For various reasons he was just never able to hold onto that starting role. Nevertheless, Van Dyke proved to be a capable cornerback who made some big plays and was relatively consistent when given the opportunity.

The problem is Van Dyke is still a very raw player. Any NFL team that takes a chance on him will have to mold him into a better all-around corner. He has good size at 6-1, but he is a lanky 176 pounds. His lack of strength was a problem in the Atlantic Coast Conference and will be an even bigger issue at the next level. However, Van Dyke has the speed to make up for it. He is a flat out runner. Van Dyke ran track at Miami and blew away many scouts with his sub 4.3 40-yard-dash times at the NFL combine and Miami's pro day.

The speed is very good thing, but there are too many other issues to work out for Van Dyke to be anything but a late round draft pick. He could work his way into the fifth round if all goes well, but the team that drafts him will need a relatively good group of corners already on the roster and have the time and willingness to put in quite a bit of work to try and turn Van Dyke into a serviceable nickelback.
