2013 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Hugh Thornton, OG, Illinois

University of Illinois offensive guard Hugh Thornton is a thickly built mauler that also has the footwork and quickness to be a good pulling lineman for years to come.

Thornton plays in a highly aggressive manner. Appears to play to get under his opponents' skin all while keeping his cool. Quick footwork, which allows him to move laterally with ease. Brings a power punch. Feet are active, but will need tweaking. Too often off balance, relies too much on upper body strength. Sometimes lunges after his matchup. Needs to sink his hips, keep his shoulders square and drive through his body. Coaching will be key to his development. Athletic enough to have some intriguing upside.

Hand placement is lacking. Can get swallowed up by bull rushes. Learning how to better properly extend his arms will help him keep guys at bay. When he maintains proper leverage, he has the strength to completely eliminate a defender every play. Loves to go after players away from the ball cleanly. Plays tough at all times all the way to the whistle.
