2014 Outlook: Quality BackupLast updated on Jul-15-2014 by Rob Warner
The G-Men are showing an infatuation with LSU wideouts as they selected Odell Beckham this year after nabbing fellow LSU alum Reuben Randle in the second round of the 2012 draft. Randle's second season in New York was a bit of a roller coaster ride: he showed flashes of his upside by posting four games of double digit fantasy points, but was a non-factor late in the season (failed to reach the end zone after Week 11 and didn't crack 40 yards over the final five weeks of the season). He did nearly double his production from his rookie season (19 catches for 298 yards and three touchdowns) by hauling in 41 catches for 611 yards and six touchdowns in 2013. That improvement is promising, but this offense wasn't productive enough to make him a dependable fantasy option. This season is where he may get over the hump. Randle has ideal size (6-foot-2, 208 lbs.) with a skill set to approach double digit touchdowns in the near future (had all six of his TDs last season between Weeks 5 and 11). The addition of Beckham Jr. is concerning, but Randle enters his third season with breakout potential. His upside makes him a solid value based on his current ADP of 105.86 or WR43.
Victor Cruz attended a workout session with Eli Manning, Odell Beckham Jr and Rueben Randle at Duke University. He was reportedly very limited but his mere presence was very encouraging. Manning invited him down and later spoke on the matter. "I told [Cruz] we were going down, I obviously wanted him to come if he wanted to, if he felt it would be beneficial," Manning said. "I didn't want to take anything away from his rehab, he was able to rehab down there. Just getting back into the meetings, seeing the plays run here and the verbiage of everything. We were doing some different things those last ten games than we did the first six, before he got hurt. Hearing the verbiage, hearing everything again, the ins and outs of the whole offense, he was able to spot up with some things, kind of light jogging, I didn't want him to push anything or do anything that would have any setbacks. So just catching passes and hearing plays called and thinking about what he has to run."Fantasy Analysis:
It isn't much, but it's something. Any positive news on Cruz is good news. If he can bounce back and be the same guy he was, everybody on the Giants offense will benefit. It's still a good idea to approach drafting Cruz with extreme caution. His torn patellar tendon was devastating and there is a very good possibility he'll never be back to 100 percent.
